Homebrew Avariel Species Details
Avariel ("aril-tel-quessir" or "Al Karak Elam" in the elvish tongue, meaning "winged folk") were among the first of the elf races to migrate to Faerun. They are more delicate than their earth-bound cousins, with hollow bones to aid their flight. They have pale skin, often porcelain white. Their eyes are slightly larger than normal and range in color from brilliant blues to green or purple. Most notable of all of the avariel's physical characteristics are their wings. Broad and feathered, they can span up to 10 feet when fully extended. They are usually white, but could be black, brown or speckled. Avariel are known to practice the dyeing of wing tips.
Avariel are said to have the most beautiful voices of all the elves, and their songs are greatly sought after by bards of other races.
Avariel Traits
Has Darkvision, Keen Senses, Fey Ancestry, Trance and FlightDarkvision
Accustomed to twilit forests and the night sky, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Keen Sense
You have proficiency in the Perception skill.
Fey Ancestry
You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can’t put you to sleep.
Trance
Elves don't need to sleep. Instead, they meditate deeply, remaining semiconscious, for 4 hours a day. (The Common word for such meditation is "trance.") While meditating, you can dream after a fashion; such dreams are actually mental exercises that have become reflexive through years of practice. After resting in this way, you gain the same benefit that a human does from 8 hours of sleep.
Flight
Because of your wings, you have a flying speed equal to your walking speed. You can’t use this flying speed if you’re wearing medium or heavy armor.
Languages
You can speak, read and write Common, Elvish and one other language of your choice. In addition, the avariel have their own unique form of sign language based around aerial movement that is less subtle than those of non-flying races, having been developed primarily for communication during flight.
Ability Score Increase
Your Dexterity score increases by 2 and one other score of your choice increases by 1.
