Homebrew Thorn Devil Lizardfolk Species Details

The Thorn Devils are a race of Lizardfolk originating in the deserts and arid climates of the world.  Much like their distant cousins of the swamp, the Thorn Devils have adapted to their own climate, leaving them with unique traits.  Unlike other Lizardfolk races, they are a bit slenderer, though still taller than the average human.  Their natural adaptations have made them more dexterous and resilient against the harsh heat of the sun.  The Thorn Devils in particular are also covered in hard plates and jagged conical spines that they take advantage of in certain combat situations.  Their colors range from every shade of desert sand and stone, helping them to blend into their natural environment.

In some realms, the Thorn Devils may be wandering caravanners, trading their goods all across the desert wastes of their homeland.  In other realms, they may have constructed massive cities along the desert oases and coasts, or perhaps even in the cool sandy underground.  Regardless of their lifestyle, the Thorn Devils are a proud, resilient, and vibrant people who trade openly and judge just as harshly.

Thorn Devil Lizardfolk Traits

You have the following racial traits...

Ability Score Increase

Running through the hot desert has left you more resilient and dexterous than some.  Your Con ability score increases by 2 and your Dex ability score increases by 1.

Natural Armor

You have tough, scaly skin. When you aren't wearing armor, your AC is 13 + your Dexterity modifier. You can use your natural armor to determine your AC if the armor you wear would leave you with a lower AC. A shield's benefits apply as normal while you use your natural armor.

Lore of the Sands

You gain proficiency with two of the following skills of your choice: Animal Handling, Nature, Perception, Stealth, and Survival.

Sand Patterned Hide

The colors of your scales reflect the harsh climate of your homeland. While in a desert or desert-like environment, you have advantage on Stealth checks.  You do not benefit from this feature while wearing medium or heavy armor.

Scales of the Thorn Devil

Your scales are covered in jagged and sharp conical spines. You have advantage vs grapple attempts and as a reaction you can deal 1d4 piercing damage to your attacker when you successfully break their grapple, or when they break yours. You do not benefit from this feature while wearing medium or heavy armor.

Devil Strike

Your spined tail and claws are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal slashing damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike. You also have a burrowing speed of 15ft when in sand or loose/soft dirt.
