Homebrew Apefolk Species Details

Descended from the Great Apes found on many habitable worlds, the Apefolk have evolved into highly intelligent hominids, while still retaining the strength and stature of their primitive ancestors.

Naturally tree-dwelling creatures, Apefolk have long arms meant for climbing and swinging through treetops. For this same reason, they are also exceptionally strong, able to lift more than double their own weight.

In addition to being natural climbers, Apefolk have feet that are as dexterous as their hands, even to the extent of having opposable thumbs.

Apefolk Traits

As a member of the Apefolk species, you have the following traits:

Arboreal Build

Your physique is adapted for living in trees. Swinging from branches with your lengthy limbs is your main mode of transport.

  • You gain a climbing speed 5 feet greater than your walking speed
  • When you make a melee attack on your turn, your reach for it is 5 feet greater than normal

Simian Strength

Your kind are stronger than your human and hadozee relatives. Carrying heavy loads and performing feats of strength are no problem for you.

  • You gain proficiency in the Athletics skill
  • You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift

Dexterous Feet

As a bonus action, you can use your feet to manipulate an object, open or close a door or container, or pick up or set down a tiny object. You can also hang from your feet while climbing, in order to free your hands.

Ability Score Increase

When determining your character’s ability scores, increase one score by 2 and increase a different score by 1, or increase three different scores by 1. Follow this rule regardless of the method you use to determine the scores, such as rolling or point buy. The “Quick Build” section for your character’s class offers suggestions on which scores to increase. You can follow those suggestions or ignore them, but you can’t raise any of your scores above 20.
