Homebrew Beholderborn Species Details

Created by the Great Mother, Eldritch Matron Deity of Beholders, Beholderborn were intended to be servants to the Beholders. However, they have the same intelligent, cunning minds as their supposed masters, and they refused a life of servitude. They devised an elaborate plan to escape by leading a faux rebellion and faking their deaths.

Intelligent Beholder Kin

Beholderborn tend to look mostly human, with the exception of  having a singular eye. Some were the subject of experimentation by their former masters and may possess additional aberrant traits that can be passed along to their offspring. Beholderborn are typically on the short side, ranging from just under 5’0” to 5’8”, and weighing as little as 60 lbs to as much as 140 lbs. But what they lack in physical stature, they more than make up for with their powerful minds.

Persistent Genes

The aberrant bloodline of the Beholderborn is mysterious and persistent, even when reproducing with another humanoid race. The offspring will be pure Beholderborn 60% of the time, showing no traits from their non-Beholderborn parent. The other 40% of the time is the opposite, with the offspring showing no trace of Beholderborn in their blood. You either are a Beholderborn or you are not.

Beholderborn Names

Beholderborn don't put much value into the importance of names, usually opting to let their offspring choose their own name later in life, if no one else ends up giving them a name.

Beholderborn Traits

Your ancestral ties to the Great Mother have granted you a unique Arcane Eye capable of producing a one of many effects chosen at random.

Ability Score Increase

Your Intelligence score increases by 2, and your Wisdom score increases by 1.

Age

Young Beholderborn age at the same rate as humans, reaching adulthood at 18 years old, after which their aging slows, allowing them to live to around 200 years old. By human standards, a mature Beholderborn always looks to be in their 20's.

Alignment

Beholderborn are typically neutral and live by the choices of logic and intellect. Some, however, cannot seem to get away from their origins and lean towards more evil alignments.

Size

Beholderborn are smaller and lighter than humans, standing between 5’0” and 5’8”,and averaging around 100 pounds. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Eye Ray

You can use your action to fire an Eye Ray at a creature you can see within 100ft. The result of your die roll on the corresponding table determines the effect you produce. The DC for any saving throws caused by this ability equals 8 + your Intelligence modifier + your proficiency bonus.
You can use your Eye Ray a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus after which you must complete a long rest to be able to use it again.

Eye Ray

1d4 Ray type
1 Paralyzing Ray. The targeted creature must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or be paralyzed until the end of your next turn.
2 Healing Ray. The targeted creature Regains 1d10 Health unless it is an undead or a construct.
3 Weak Petrification Ray. The targeted creature must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or be encased in a thin layer of stone, reducing it's movement by half until it, or another creature uses an action to break the thin layer of stone away.
4 Lesser Disintegration Ray. The targeted creature must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take 2d10 force damage or half as much on a save.
If this damage reduces the creature to 0 hit points, its body remains, but any non-magical items it is carrying become a pile of fine gray dust. After using this effect, you are blind and suffer all the effects of the blinded condition until the end of your next turn. The damage increases to 3d10 at 6th level, 4d10 at 11th level, and 5d10 at 16th level.

Telepathy

Due to your aberrant nature, you have the innate ability to speak directly into the minds of others. You may speak telepathically to those within 15ft of you, though they are unable to respond in the same way. As your aberrant mind intertwines and slithers around through their minds, it feels weird and unsettling to them and they may choose to block out your messages.

Darkvision

Thanks to your aberrant nature, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Deep Speech.  Deep Speech is the language of aberrations, an alien form of communication originating in the Far Realm. It has no native script of its own, but when written by mortals uses the Espruar script. It was first transcribed by the drow due to frequent contact between the two groups living in relatively close proximity within the Underdark.
