Homebrew Crocfolk Species Details

While not common outside of their territories, Crocfolk can be found throughout the Material Plane. They generally congregate in swamp and river lands forming small communities. These communities tend to have very little in terms of structure or government and can be best described as 'mildly tolerated co-habitation.' While these communities lack a tight social framework, the clan will aggressively defend their territory from any outsider.

Crocfolk tend to have deep earthly color but may have a variety of scale patterns. Due to their bulk and semi-aquatic nature, Crocfolk wear little in terms of clothing and cannot wear any conventional armor. Fortunately for them their scales are extremely sturdy and provide robust natural protection.

Life Span

Crocfolk mature slightly faster than humans and reach full adult hood by their 15th summer. Most live past 70, but they have been known to live up to 150 years.

Size

The full length of a Crocfolk is between 5 - 10 feet, however they rarely stand straight up and prefer to take on a hunched stature that is significantly shorter than their full length.

Creature Type

Crocfolk count as both humanoid and monstrosity.

Ability Score Increases

When determining your character’s ability scores, increase one score by 2 and increase a different score by 1, or increase three different scores by 1. Follow this rule regardless of the method you use to determine the scores, such as rolling or point buy. The “Quick Build” section for your character’s class offers suggestions on which scores to increase. You can follow those suggestions or ignore them, but you can’t raise any of your scores above 20.

Languages

Your character can speak, read, and write Common and one other language that you and your DM agree is appropriate for the character.

Crocfolk Traits

As a crocfolk, you have the following racial traits.

Darkvision

Accustomed to hunting at night, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Keen Smell

Thanks to your time hunting prey, you have advantage on Wisdom (Perception), Wisdom (Survival), and Intelligence (Investigation) checks that involve smell. This works whether or not you are submerged.

Creature Type

You are a Humanoid and a Monstrosity.

Size

You are Medium.

Speed

Your walking speed is 20 ft., and you have a swimming speed of 45 feet.

Bite

You have a fanged maw that you can use to make unarmed strikes. When you hit with it, the strike deals 1d6 + your Strength modifier slashing damage, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

Hold Breath

You can hold your breath for up to 8 hours.

Hungry Jaws

You can throw yourself into a feeding frenzy. As a bonus action, you can make a special attack with your Bite. If the attack hits, it deals its normal damage, and you gain temporary hit points equal to your proficiency bonus. You can use this trait a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

Natural Armor

Your hide provides you a base AC of 17 (your Dexterity modifier doesn’t affect this number). You can’t wear light, medium, or heavy armor, but if you are using a shield, you can apply the shield’s bonus as normal.
