Homebrew Zazoa Species Details

Zazoas are primarily water dwellers, having the ability to breathe underwater an move up to 45ft per turn while swimming. However, in addition to their gills, they have developed human-like lungs, being able to breathe on land, as well as using their tail to slither like a snake, though at 15ft per turn. These are very tough creatures, gaining a +1 to their STR modifier and +1 to their CON modifier. Additionally, as a consequence of living in deep parts of the sea where there is not much light, they have the ability to glow from their fins at will or intensify it into a quick flash to disorient nearby creatures. As a consequence from living under the crushing weight of the sea waters, Zazoas are typically quite short, being an average of 4 feet tall. It is extremely rare to meet one taller than 5 feet.

From living in the dark depths, Zazoas have evolved the ability to produce moderate light from the tips of their fins, enough to illuminate a 10 foot radius around them above ground and a 20 foot radius under ground. They may maintain this light for up to six hours per long rest. Additionally, they may flash an intense light from their fins, forcing any creature that is looking at them to succeed a CON saving throw or have disadvantage on their next attack and giving any creature that tries to hit it advantage, but if the target takes damage, it will no longer have disadvantage on its next attack. You may aim this in a cone shape and use this ability three times per long rest or two times per short rest and use it as a bonus action.
