Homebrew Canari Species Details
A gift from the celestial planes, the Canari are a race of bipedal humanoid dogs. The Canari are a small but resilient race that tend to form tight bonds with a select few. This makes the Canari a dedicated member to any adventuring party.
As with all creatures, some Canari may become tainted or may be initially raised in a less than lawful environment. It is these Canari that are marked as "Stray" in the Canari community. These Strays do not possess any altered attributes from the rest of the Canari race, but are not the typical good alignment like most of the others.
Canari Traits
Despite their small stature, Canari possess unique qualities that set them apart.Ability Score Increase
Your Dexterity score increases by 2, and your Charisma score increases by 1.
Age
The Canari are friendly and loving creatures, which makes their shorter lifespans bittersweet. The Canari reach the equivalent of adulthood by 3 and live to be 30 on average, but there have been stories of Canari that have lived longer through the power of their bond.
Alignment
The Canari race leans mostly toward the good alignments, aside from the rare "Strays".
Size
Canari come in various sizes but on average fall between 3 and 4 feet tall, with an average weight of 35 to 45 pounds. But it is not unheard of for certain towns to have a "well fed" Canari resident.
Speed
Canari have a base walking speed of 25 feet.
Heightened Senses
Due to their longer snouts and larger ears, Canari are physiologically better at picking up on sounds and smells. Because of this, Canari have advantage on Perception checks involving sounds and smells.
Bite
As an action, Canari are able to attack with their sharp teeth. This bite deals 1d4 piercing damage plus your Strength modifier. The Canari are proficient with their teeth and add their Strength modifier and their Proficiency bonus to the attack roll.
The Canari may also latch onto their target as an immediate bonus action once they have successfully bitten down. This grapple requires the victim to make a Strength saving throw, which is repeated at the start of each of their turns. While grappled in this way, the target takes a flat 1d4 piercing damage after failing to remove the Canari on their turn. While the target is grappled in this way, the target has advantage on all melee based attacks on the attached Canari. In addition, the Canari is unable to attack in any manner while it is attached.
The Canari may willingly release their hold as a bonus action on their turn.
The Bite Save DC is 10 plus your Strength modifier plus your Proficiency bonus.
Companion's Bond
The Bond between a Canari and their chosen companion is strong, even if it is one sided. The Canari are naturally loyal and will push themselves beyond their limits to aid their companion. This bond is sacred to the Canari and is not given without consideration.
The Canari may bestow the Companion's Bond on 1 creature starting at first level, a second bond may be bestowed upon 1 additional creature after reaching level 10. The Canari may choose to remove 1 bond upon reaching the next level after placing it, and may select a new companion after doing so.
Once a bond has been formed, the Canari may attempt to bite any creature that damages their companion, as long as they are within 5 feet of the attacker. This bite is an extra attack and does not spend the Canari's action for that turn. In addition to this bite, as a reaction the Canari is able to move up to their full movement plus 10 feet towards their companion, when the companion takes damage. This bite and movement may only be done once per round.
This bond also comes with a price. While the Canari is bonded with a creature, it has disadvantage on Persuasion and Perception checks imposed on it by their companion. Due to the strong emotional connection that the Canari forms with their companion, it also takes a toll on the Canari. If an active companion of the Canari should die, the Canari immediately suffers 2d8 Psychic damage and is unable to regain these hit points until it has finished a long rest. Additionally, if the Psychic damage drops the Canari to 0 hit points, it has disadvantage on it's first death save.
Languages
You can speak, read, and write Common and Bwark.
Bwark is the native language of the Canari. It has no written form and consists of various growls and barking sounds. Simple words and phrases may be taught to a companion, but full mastery of Bwark is nearly impossible without the help of magic.
