Homebrew Cloudling Species Details
In some planes, greater beings create servants, full creatures with free will and emotions. These servants are almost always loyal to their masters, and occasionally that service requires them, in some way or another, to travel to another plane. Because of their translucent misty skin, floaty movements, and slowly shifting appearance, the inhabitants of the Material Plane refer to these creatures as “Cloudlings”. Cloudlings have milky, semi-transparent skin, and no visible organs, giving them the appearance of creatures made of mist or fog. Additionally, their forms are known to change over time, with their body potentially looking completely different after a night’s rest. A very few Cloudlings decide to abandon the tasks of their master, and sever their ties with them. These Cloudlings are known as “Strays”, and are considered abominations by other Cloudlings and mortal followers of their master. Strays are characterized by a glowing red brand on one hand, although few would recognize its meaning. The brand’s shape depends on the master abandoned, and is usually an inversion of some holy or eldritch symbol of the master.
Cloudling Traits
Your Cloudling character has a number of traits in common with other Cloudlings.Creature Type
Cloudlings are created in, and native to, the plane of their master. They are Celestials, but do not gain any benefits or penalties from this Type (such as damage resistances or vulnerabilities).
Size
Cloudlings are varied in height and build, typically ranging from 3 to 7 feet tall. Their light, cloudlike body means that they typically weigh anywhere from 15 to 70 pounds. You are either Medium or Small, your choice.
Age
Cloudlings are not fully mortal creatures, and do not age like them. Cloudlings are considered mature upon creation, and have a theoretically infinite lifespan. Their appearance does not show or change with age, and they cannot die of old age. They are still vulnerable to magical effects associated with age, however.
Speed
Cloudlings move surprisingly fast for their slow, drifting movements. You have a movement speed of 30 feet.
Languages
You speak Common, and one other language of your choice.
Ability Score Increase
Cloudlings are versatile in their skills, depending on their purpose, and on their training and experience. Add +2 to one Ability Score, and +1 to another.
Shifting Features
Cloudlings‘ versatile nature is reflected in their bodies, as well. Upon completing a long rest, you may do any number of the following:
- Become up to 6 inches taller or shorter. You cannot become tall or short enough to change size categories.
- Change your hair‘s color, length, or style.
- Change your sex.
- Change your build, increasing or decreasing your weight by up to 5 pounds, to a maximum of 75 and a minimum of 15.
- Change your eye color.
Cloudling Magic
Cloudlings are beings of foreign planes, capable of using them for transport across any other plane. While outside of your home plane, you can cast misty step once per long rest, without expending a spell slot. At 9th level, you may cast the spell dimension door once per long rest with this trait, without expending a spell slot. Additionally, if you have Spellcasting or Pact Magic slots of the appropriate level, you may expend one to cast one of these spells.
