Homebrew Burrowler Species Details

Sequestered in high mountains atop tall trees and underground, the Burrowler, sometimes called night birds, evoke fear and wonder. Many Burrowler aren’t even native to the continent they are in. They hail from a continent furthest to the north — from the boundless mountains of Piceon.

They are immigrants, refugees, scouts, and explorers, their outposts functioning as footholds in a world both strange and alien.

Beak and Feather

From below, Burrowler look much like large owls. Only when they descend to roost on a branch or walk across the ground does their humanoid appearance reveal itself. Standing upright, Burrowler might reach 6 feet tall, and they have long, narrow legs that taper to sharp talons.

Feathers cover their bodies. Their plumage typically denotes membership in a colony. Males look like they are snow owls , with feathers of white, light grey, and black. Females have more subdued colours, usually Brown or Gray. Their heads complete the avian appearance, being something a owl distinct tribal variations.

ground Wardens

Now where are the Burrowler more comfortable than in the sky no where except the ground. They can spend hours burrowing, and some go as long as days, locking the dirt in place and letting the thermals keep them warm. In battle, they prove dynamic and athletic burrowers and flyers, moving with remarkable speed and grace to lash opponents with weapons or talons then turning and flying away after they win.

Once airborne, an Burrowler leaves the sky with reluctance unless their going to go burrowing underground. On their native continent, they can fly for days, months, or years landing only to lay their eggs and feed their young before launching themselves back into the air or under ground. Those that make it to a new continent find it a strange place. They sometimes forget or ignore vertical distances, and they have nothing but pity for those earthbound who cant fly nore go under ground.

Avian Mannerisms

The resemblance of Burrowler to birds isn’t limited to physical features. Burrowler display many of the same mannerisms as ordinary owls. They are fastidious about their plumage, frequently tending their feathers, cleaning and scratching away any tiny passengers they might have picked up. When they deign to descend from the sky, they often do so near arctic waters where they can catch fish and bathe in the ice cold water themselves.

Many Burrowler punctuate their speech with hoots and whistles, sounds they use to convey emphasis and to shade meaning, much as a human might through facial expressions and gestures. An Burrowler might become frustrated with people who fail to pick up on the nuances; an Burrowler threat might be taken as a jest and vice versa.

Most Burrowler love being alone and will start being extremely paranoid when they are in large groups. To be completely alone, underground burrowing, or meditating with absolutely no interruptions is a pleasure few Burrowler can resist. Even when perched on a high branch or at rest in their mountaintop homes, they appear at ease, with eyes shut and bodies completely relaxed.

Homelands

Most Burrowler live on the furthest north continent of Piceon. Burrowler can be drawn to Piceon, sometimes by complete instinct. In the homeland of Burrowler Piceon the Burrowler have a group of special forces bounty hunters commissioned by the Burrowler government known all across the world as the burhunters they go around the world collecting bountys and retrieving  and torturing rouge burhunters and gives all the money to the Burrowler government every one knows that they are corrupt but anyone that speaks out about it gets publicly executed .

Once tribes of aarakocra settle in an area, they share a hunting territory that extends across an area up to 100 miles on a side, with each tribe hunting in the lands nearest to their colony, ranging farther should game become scarce.

A typical colony consists of one large, open-roofed nest made of woven vines. The eldest acts as leader with the support of a shaman.
