Homebrew Umbravir Species Details

The Umbravir are nearly impossible to see, absorbing 100% of all light, except for their glowing eyes. They are distant relatives of the elves,  but share little in common aside from their forms. They originated in Shadowfell, the result of an ancient ritual and a curse to never feel the light again. They are a tightly knit race, with a heavy mistrust of others. They are unlikely to leave Shadowfell, but it is not unheard of to find a lone Umbravir wandering the material plane in search of enlightenment. They are a mute race, communicating through touch, writing, and various forms of artistic expression. To an outsider they may seem strange an alien, but the Umbravir are incredibly caring for those they deem trustworthy.

The Umbravir look like holes in the air, a spot where no light can travel. The only truly visible part of them are their glowing eyes, which come in a myriad of colors ranging from white, to pale greens and yellows, all the way to deep reds and piercing blues. As a result of the curse, anything an Umbravir has direct contact with will eventually take on the same properties. The speed of this depends on how often the contact is maintained and how large the object is. Eventually these items will also absorb 100% of light, but if they are left untouched for long enough they will eventually show light again. Gloves are a common staple among the Umbravir, so that they do not spread the curse to common objects.

The Umbravir as incredible at sneaking thanks to their complexion, making them excellent thieves. Stories can be found circulating large cities of beings of pure darkness running through the night, their glowing eyes the only sign of anything moving at all. Not all turn towards theft, however. With their communication heavily based in writing, drawing, and sculpting, the Umbravir are incredible artists as well, having had years of perfecting art as a language. Many are also fond of music, seeing as they cannot make sound themselves. The prejudices against them as an evil race make them distrustful of outsiders, and reliant on each other. Regardless of blood relation, a group of Umbravir will consider each other family and look out for the rest as such. If an Umbravir decides that an outsider is worthy of becoming part of this family, they will find endless support from the dark figures.

Umbravir Traits

The Umbravir are perhaps the most agile of thieves and rogues, thanks to these traits.

Darkvision

Generations of living in Shadowfell allow the Umbravir to see well in darkness. You can see up to 60 feet as if it were bright light, and an additional 60 feet as if it were dim light.

Ability Score Increase

By not reflecting any light, the Umbravir are amazing at stealth, giving them +2 to dexterity. Their solitary lifestyle of contemplation and artistic abilities gives them a +1 to wisdom.

Made Of Darkness

Being what they are, the Umbravir gain proficiency in the Stealth skill, and advantage when in darkness.

One With Shadows

The Umbravir have a special connection with the darkness, allowing them to teleport as an action from one spot of darkness to another within 50 feet. This can be used a number of times equal to your wisdom modifier, all of which become usable again after a long rest.

Spreading the Curse

As part of the curse of the Umbravir, any item you come in direct contact with will slowly take on the same curse, making them absorb 100% of light. The amount of time this takes can range from a couple days to several weeks, depending on how often it comes into direct contact with you and how large it is. If left alone for long enough, the effects of the curse will leave the affected item.

Other attributes

The Umbravir age the same as elves, but reach maturity much quicker at 16 years old. Your size is medium, and you have a walking speed of 30 feet. The Umbravir understand common and undercommon, but cannot speak it themselves. As creatures heavily reliant upon creativity and isolation, they are more likely than not chaotic neutral.

Silent As Night

As part of the curse, members of the Umbravir cannot speak, and communicate through combinations of touch, writing, and art. In order to help you communicate, pick one artisan tool to have proficiency in. When you use this or any other artisan tools you are proficient in, you can communicate easily with any creature that can read the languages you understand. Attempting to communicate without them requires you to succeed on a DC 15 Charisma save, or the message is meaningless to anyone else.
