Homebrew Av'oix Species Details
The Av'oix is a creature that resembles a polished gem with thin hairlike filaments sprouting out the back of its body. The color of the Av'oix varies depending on its emotion with different Av'oix having different colors for their emotions making getting to know a specific Av'oix important so as to not misunderstand its color spectrum. The size of an Av'oix also changes based on the health of the specimen with a healthy Av'oix thriving inside a host getting as large as a human fist and an unhealthy starving Av'oix shrinking down to roughly a thumb in size. Outside of a suitable host, an Av'oix is a harmless wriggling creature with almost no defensive measures aside from escape and taking advantage of its small size to hide and await an opportunity to acquire a host. Once a host is acquired the Av'oix situates itself in front of the sternum of the creature and burrows into the flesh using its filaments to absorb nutrients and grow while spreading further and further through the body. Upon completion of its growth, the Av'oix will have taken complete control of the host, rendering the host consciousness either suppressed or aware depending on the needs and situations the duo might find themselves in. Not only does the Av'oix take over the host body but it will also acquire some of the host's memories as well, being able to use skills that person would also be able to use. Removal of an Av'oix from its host forcefully will almost always result in the death of the host and severe damage to the Av'oix while a willing separation is possible and will result in both specimens emerging from the split weakened but healthy.
Av'oix Traits
You have the following racial traitsAge
You do not age but your host will age at whatever the default aging speed of the host race is. Outside of a host, you will last roughly a week before withering and dying.
Alignment
Due to their nature of absorbing memories and experiences, the Av'oix are extremely susceptible to emotional changes brought on by the personality of the host with good-natured hosts causing beneficial changes like charitability and friendliness while bad or malicious hosts causing changes like selfishness or lack of empathy. Regardless of where you start, upon taking a host your alignment will shift one space in the direction of your host's alignment, this change is not permanent and can be changed back through work.
Size
A healthy Av'oix will fully expand to its max size of four inches while attached to its host but will retract to one inch once separated. Regardless of if you are fully expanded or not you are considered a tiny creature.
Speed
Alone and without a host you have a walking speed of 5 feet and a burrow speed of 5 feet.
Languages
You can speak common and one random language of your host. if your host only knows one language then you automatically learn that language for the duration of your time attached. upon separation, you lose the ability to speak that language.
Limited Telepathy
You can telepathically speak to any creature within 30 feet. You do not have to share a language to speak, however, they must be able to speak a language. You can only communicate simple ideas.
What's your's is mine, and what's mine is mine
The linchpin of your skillset. You may assume control of one host creature of your choice. To successfully assume control of a host you must succeed in a DC18 saving throw or be forcefully expelled from the body, this does not apply to willing hosts, you may make 2 attempts a day before retreating into yourself to recuperate. An unwilling host may make two attempts a day to regain control and expel you from their body by succeeding in a DC16 saving throw. The mind of the host can be either suppressed or allowed to remain conscious but regardless of status, unwilling hosts can still fight to regain control. While in control of the host, you are treated as whatever type the host is with all weaknesses and strengths, however, your base weaknesses will always overpower that of your host (ie: if you are weak to poison and your host is resistant you are still weak to poison). Your level will overall remain the same no matter what level the host was at the time you assume control however the class of the host will remain at whatever level it was before and you must shore up your level by using experience from a previous host class (ie: If your level five fighter host dies and you assume control of a level three monk, you will remain a level three monk with two levels in fighter) this only applies for consecutive hosts. Upon taking a new host you must start at level one and over the course of a week in-game you will regain the levels you lost in transition as you slowly bond with the host and assimilate their knowledge. You can only control medium to small creatures.
You are fragile
being a creature that relies on your host nervous system and brain you are vulnerable to lightning, poison, psychic and thunder damage
Death may not be the end
Upon failing three death saving throws you may attempt two more throws and if either of them is successful you can remove yourself from your deceased host, this counts toward your 2 attempts a day to control someone.
