Homebrew Albarakocra Species Details

When an aarakocra finds themselves in Wildspace, they may happen across an Albari. If they happen to have a child together, the child will have the ability to dwell in both Wildspace and the Elemental Plane of Air. The union of any creature with an Albari is seen as taboo because of the reputation that these trickster birds have. However, any Albarakocra child can find a home for themselves in Wildspace as they are so rare that most people can’t deduce their parentage.

Avian and Strange

Albarakocra are not like their Aarakocran parents, they tend to be even more avian in appearance than anything else. They have long, almost human faces with wide beaks and slanted, beady eyes, like their Albari parent. Their ears aren’t visible but they have very keen hearing.

They are also covered in short feathers of varying colors, ranging from sooty grey to pale brown to pure white. They range between three and five feet tall and they have long narrow legs that end in large, sharp talons with an opposable digit. They have impressively large wings along their back despite also having humanoid arms.

Chaotic Ambivalence

The Albarakocra appear as though they revel in chaos for the sake of chaos but there is almost always a method to their madness. They may decide on one course of action for a time but after a while they may change their mind or carry on with whatever their master plan was initially. They use their powers of illusion to sow as much chaos as possible to serve their ends.

An effort to achieve their ends, whatever those happen to be, tends to be what calls these beings out to adventure. Boredom is always a concern for them so they tend to wander looking for things to interest them. They can survive in Wildspace so they are able to follow spelljamming ships to satiate their itch for adventure. They are also known to travel to the Elemental Plane of Air when they have the ability to do so. They enjoy flying and don’t like being on the ground much, similar to their Aarokocran parent.

Albarakocran Mannerisms

Because of their Aarakocran heritage, Albarakocra can sometimes display more avian mannerisms. They are particular about keeping their plumage clean at all times, picking out debris and smoothing the oil their skin naturally produces through the feathers. They also enjoy taking treasure back to their nests to beautify them. Their nests are usually hidden in a secret location, though, most times, it’s in the middle of a busy port so that they can keep an eye out for adventurers.

They are usually more solitary, only pairing up to mate and raise young. It's rare, but Albarakocra does have the ability to have friends, though how well they treat those friends is up to interpretation.

Albarakocras also dislike combat. If they are forced into combat, they rely mostly on their talons. While on the ground, they rely on their beak. Most often, however, they will try to confuse and confound their foe before running away. They can become invisible at will after a certain age, along with a few other spells that help them to escape combat.

Lastly, they hate confinement. They don’t like being grounded, trapped (especially underground) or imprisoned by earth in any capacity. As residents of Wildspace and the Elemental Plane of Air primarily, they keep alert in case of capture or traps.

Albarakocra Names

Albarakocra sometimes trill or click when they speak and this includes their names. Names can have two to four syllables with the sounds acting as connectors. When interacting with other races, they may use nicknames gained from people they meet - or that they’ve given themselves. They also don’t mind using shortened versions of their names.

An albarakocra of any gender may have names similar to these: Amar, Bael, Deekek, Errk, Gak, Ikki, Jore, Mok, Quaf, Salleek, Urreek, or Zeed.
