Homebrew Anglerian Species Details

It was the middle of the night, not a singular star in the sky. Living underneath the waters, I was used to the dim light. It was comforting to me. I was always told as a child that light in the ocean is a sign of danger, yet it was never explained to me. Nevertheless, I soon learned why that fateful night. I had just finished up volunteering at the library for the night when I noticed a yellow ball of light in the distance. It was so...mesmerizing.

I began to swim to the light, using my tail to propel myself forward with speed. I felt a hand pull me back as a triton warrior of my village yanked my teenage self back. I watched as the light went from being still to dashing forward at me with an alarming speed. I saw one pitch black hand reach out of the dark for my face as a trident entered the creatures chest. If it hadn't been for that one triton, I wouldn't be alive today.

With a social standing clouded in darkness, the anglerians often lean towards chaotic/neutral evil. The anglerians see the tritons as pathetic descendants of their race. With insane speed, a hivemind telepathy, and echolocation to find their surroundings in the dark, the anglerians are a strong threat to the undersea!

Evolved Angler Fish

Descendants of the angler fish, the Anglerians learned to evolve, adapt, and utilize their traits better than their ancestors could ever hope. Anglerians skin tend to shift between an oceanic blue and a midnight black. The main portion of the torso, the palm of their hands, and portions of their arms and tail tend to be midnight black while the rest of their body tends to be dark gradients of blue. Anglerians have two huge eyes on the side of their heads, blind anglerians being fully born without eyes. This does not leave them defenseless however as their other senses easily make up for their missing eyesight. Anglerians have kept the first and second dorsal fin located on their back and head to allow them to rip through the waves. With razor sharp teeth and a bulb dangling above their head, they easily lure and kill their prey. Lastly, they have strong, beefy tails often the length of their torso to propel them at insane speeds underwater.

Ravine Life

Anglerian villages are often found built into caves on the sides of deep ocean ravines! With steel and stone pillars to secure the integrity of the cave ceilings, the anglerian villages are formed of compact, stone homes built into the wall! They often have a stone statue built of whatever patron/god the village worships in the center of the village. Stone huts are often constructed to be used as marketing buildings whether it be a shop, an entertainment venue, or a restaurant. Most villages tend to tame colossal eels to protect their villages and to use them for raids against triton villages.

Anglerian Culture

When it comes to anglerians, they often lean to classes that revolve around dexterity to their intense speed levels. Rogues, monks, and rangers are the most common classes for an anglerian! Warlocks (the most commonly used magic class for anglerians), wizards, sorcerers, and druids aren't as common, but they tend to have a strong social reputation in the village due to magic users being seen as highly intelligent by their race. Paladins, barbarians, blood hunters, fighters, and clerics are often forced to act as body guards for the villages and anglerians of high reputation. These classes are rather uncommon, but not unheard of with the anglerian culture. Artificers and bards are rather rare for anglerians so cherish the ones that choose this path.

While anglerians can easily hold their own against other monsters and races from the undersea and the land, they heavily believe that all raids and hunts should be done in packs to maximize safety and efficiency! Anglerians can often be seen hunting in packs of 10 and raiding small villages in groups of 50. If they choose to set their sights on a large city or kingdoms, they would rather bring their whole army in one surge, leaving behind two elders and 5-10 guardians in case things go wrong.

Every day is a feast in the anglerian villages. While they do tend to have food joints in their town, every village has a dedicated time where the hunters come back from the hunt, provide the food to the chefs, and hold a giant feast for the whole village to devour. They make sure to ration the food so they do not overhunt and kill off the wildlife that they wish to devour. There are no words that are spoken at the table during the feast for words are not needed. The simple smiles and joy from the villager children and adults speak more than the vocal cords could ever express.

Anglerian Names

Anglerians names often follow similar themes to that of orcs, demons, and succubi. They do this so that they may speak these words in Anglerisk with ease as these names sound the smoothest in their language. Elvish and human names often sound like the screeching of the damned in Anglerisk so they tend to avoid such names.

Male Anglerian Names: Guag, Wogharod, Bugrash, Varbuk, Slog, Filge, Zablun, Thargihoze, Cirux, Dastussu, Sane

Female Anglerian Names: Shel, Dura, Bolar, Lazgar, Shaste, Hylgi, Nugalth, Sarney, Elrinvielle, Penrahne, Feltia

Mercenaries For Hire

Anglerians may not work with mercenary guilds, but their villages act as their own special form of a mercenary guild. If you offer a pack leader food and money, you can easily recruit an entire pack to your aid. Just make sure you can back your promise to the pack. You might just regret it.

Anglerian Traits

The enhanced traits of the anglerians!

Ability Score Increase

Your Intelligence score increases by 1, and your Dexterity score increases by 2.

Age

Anglerians do not have a known age limit as they often die in battle before they ever die to old age. That being said, the average anglerian lives to be 215 years old! They mature faster than humans as they reach adult hood at 15. On top of this, anglerian children learn how to fight for the pack at age 5. They are allowed to start going on hunts and participating in guard duties at 10.

Size

Anglerian height ranges from 5-7 feet tall, averagely standing around 6'2. Average anglerian weight is 237 lbs!

Speed

Your base walking speed is 40 feet.

Darkvision

Due to your kind living in the deep darks of the ocean, you have developed an enhanced form of dark vision! You can see in dim light within 120 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Deep Speech, Abyssal, Primordial, and Anglerisk! (Due to dnd beyond limitations, I do not have a way to make it automatically give you anglerisk as it is a homebrew race. You will have to add it manually, sorry D:)

Hivemind

Due to the anglerians fighting and traveling in packs, they naturally developed a form of hivemind telepathy. Anglerians have the ability to form hivemind telepathic links with any of their allies. While this does mean that they can essentially open a web of telepathy for groups of people to chat to each other through this one web, it does also limit their abilities as they cannot do this with anyone they do not consider an ally/friend!

Hunter's Traits

Similar to their ancestors, they mastered the art of ambush hunting! These hunters have a few traits that they use to hunt their prey!

Trickster's Bulb

Anglerians have kept close to their roots when it comes to the art of ambush. While the bulb on their head is normally doused, when hunting they tend to keep it lit to attract any form of helpless prey. Anyone who spots these lights in the dark must make an intelligence saving throw or feel compelled to move towards the light. This gives the anglerian, no matter the class, a free sneak attack damage die on their ambush. On top of that, they get advantage on their first attack on the prey.

Hunter's Fangs

With razor sharp fangs, the anglerians often chomp down on their prey to tear away skin. This is often used as a way of healing during battle as well. The first bite of a battle gives anglerians 5 temporary hit points no matter the damage dealt! Hunters fangs can be used as a bonus action as it is a racial trait natural to their culture and way of fighting. Hunters fangs starts off doing a d10 of damage. The enemy must roll a con save. On a failed save, they take a d4 of bleeding damage per round til they either treat the wound or succeed a con save.

Crushing Depths

The cold does not shake you and neither does a warhammer to the chest. Due to the harsh living conditions of the cold, dark deep ravines that you inhabit, you have developed resistance to the cold and the impact of bludgeoning weapons.

Natural Hunter

Being the masters of the oceanic hunt that they are, they have learned to use and adapt to the darkness of the ocean. They have developed a proficiency in stealth and 80 ft of blindsight in the water (40 ft on land) by use of echolocation.
