Homebrew Canidae Sapien Species Details

Canidae Sapiens is the scholarly term for what many laymen would call 'Dogmen'. Though their original lineage varies from person to person, they all have one thing in common: magically augmented abilities reflective of a canine beast.

Through magical means, they gain keener senses and even begin to exhibit physical features typical of the dog race of their choosing. As this practice takes time and repetition, these physical manifestations are often permanent. Those who shapeshift carelessly may also find themselves unexpectedly retaining some aspects of their shifted form.

Canidae Sapien Traits

Though Canidae Sapiens can hail from any race and background, and thus follow the norms for their expected height, weight, and rate of aging, they have eschewed their former typicality for heightened abilities in areas befitting a canine. They also bear prototypical physical features pertaining to their chosen transformation, such as ears, nose, tail, and the like.

Hunter's Hone

You are more lithe and hardy than an unchanged counterpart. Your Constitution score increases by 2, and your Strength score increases by 1.

Fierce Instinct

Your connection to your beastkin and the domain they prowl has granted you the tools to thrive in the way you see fit.

You have proficiency in one of the following skills of your choice: Athletics, Intimidation, Perception, or Survival.

Keen eyes

Your eyes have been altered by your transformations, able to adapt more quickly to darkness. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of yellow and blue.

Howling Roar

As a bonus action, you can growl, gnash your teeth, or howl menacingly. Creatures of your choice within 10 feet of you that can hear you must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or become frightened of you until the end of your next turn. The DC of the save equals 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Constitution modifier. Once you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest.

Savage Maw

Your jaw has become powerful and fearsome, growing long and sharp fang-like teeth. You can use your elongated fangs to make an unarmed strike as a bonus action. If you hit with your fangs, you can deal piercing damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

Beast Tongues

You can speak Common, and one additional language of your choice. You are also able to better read intent from beasts with whom you have spent time, gaining advantage on Animal Handling checks involving canines.
