Homebrew Bullywug Species Details

 

These humanoid frogs tend to stick to swamps, marshes, and generally damp areas. They are perfectly intelligent, though other races often assume that they are a little on the dumb side. Like a true frog, they are amphibious and can breathe in air or under water. Water more or less is their preferred terrain, as their bodies make it difficult for them to walk on their hind legs on land, leaving them with an awkward gait. Their legs remain strong, however, allowing them to jump significantly higher than most.

Like the frogs and toads to which they are distant cousins, bullywug skin can be green, grey, or mottled yellow, or brown.

You are a somewhat squat creature, with a far broader body than most races, making you look shorter than you are. You have four fingers on each hand, including a thumb. Your skin looks waxy and distinct, though the colors themselves shift a bit.

A typical bullywug is between 4 and 5 feet tall, though some can get as tall as 5'6.

A typical bullywug has a life span of 60 years, and is considered an adult at around 10.

Names: Bullywug society involves a lot of oral history, and bragging is practically a national sport. They love to tell stories about their exploits, the grander the better. In fact, Bullywugs tend to assume that everything anyone claims is an inflated boast of what actually happened, which often leads to them thinking the lives of others are somewhat pathetic; they automatically downgrade any claim to get rid of the boast. Bullywugs don't have a normal family structure; all eggs are collected in the same place, and there is no way to tell which of the males are the father. Though they are given first names when they emerge from the water for the first time, they choose their own surnames, however. This is one of the places that their boasting nature is most prevalent; they are as much titles as they are names. Names are not gendered, and first names are usually monosyllabic. There could be a Billywug named Gus, but not one named Nathaniel.

Surnames: the giant-slayer, the magnificent, dragon tamer, the undefeated, the unstoppable, etc. 

Bullywugs are no more or less religious than anyone else, but they tend to be somewhat superstitious.
