Homebrew Aqualing Species Details

A strange race of water-spawned creatures, wildly known for a plethora of behaviors and things. While they seem strange and alien, they tend to enjoy making bonds and living life with whoever they come across.
The appearance of this race tends to change based on the region or heritage, though they all have some sort of aquatic like appearance. Their true form mostly tends to be squid-like or octopus-like, though they are known to have some variation in rare cases.
Aqualings, like some other races, have an innate ability to transform into a more humanoid appearance, taking on a specific appearance to blend in and interact on the surface, though every form has some sort of sea-like appearance attached to it. Whether that be tentacles for hair, small gills on their cheeks, or something else, every form has one.

Aqualing Traits

As an Aqualing, you have the following traits:

Ability Score Increase

You may either increase one stat by 2 and another by 1, or three stats by 1. Please do not apply these bonuses to the same stat, even though beyond lets you.

Creature Type

As an Aqualing, your body is alien and strange. Because of this, your body is closer to an aberration than it is to other humanoids, no matter the form you are in.

Interchangeable Form

While in your innate form, you have a walking speed of 15, and a swimming speed of 40 feet. In addition, you can breathe underwater, and hold your breath on land for 1 hour. While in your humanoid form, you only have a walking speed of 30 and no swimming speed, and cannot breathe underwater. Changing between forms takes an action. An equipment you are wearing is not transformed with you, and you revert to your true form when you die, or when experiencing extreme emotions, to the dm's discretion.

Darkvision

You have darkvision of 60 feet. You see dim conditions as bright and dark conditions as dim. This ability does not let you see through magical darkness, and you can only see in shades of gray while in these conditions.

Age

Aqualings have a unique body form, which allows them to live twice as long as humans tend to, usually up to 250 years. They reach maturity at 18.

Size

Aqualings stand anywhere from under 4 feet to almost 6 feet when in their humanoid form, and may be either Small or Medium. They are Small in their natural form.

Natural Weapon

While in your innate form, you are incapable of providing somatic or verbal components for spells, as well as being unable to use weapons beyond your natural weapons. This natural weapon takes form of a tendril or tentacle, or something to a similar effect, and deals 1d4 + strength bludgeoning damage.

Languages

Due to heritage and ancestral memory, you know how to speak, read, and write common, as well as being able to speak Deep Speech.

Aqualing Magic

As an Aqualing, you are capable of casting select spells. You know the Vicious Mockery cantrip and can cast it at will. At level 3, you can cast Create or Destroy Water once per short or long rest. Finally, at level 5, you can cast Darkness once per short or long rest. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
