Homebrew Carnis Species Details

Rustling in the bushes, something approaches.

Humanoid but certainly not a human.

Large, almost bulging eyes and a wide grin are your final sight before it notices you.

Flesh Hunters

Carnis are tall creatures, standing at around 8 feet tall. They usually have no skin and as such, appear red and fleshy. Carnis have large eyes and their mouths appear as a wide grin, but that does not necessarily mean they are always happy. Their jaws are built as such to allow them to open their mouths almost similar to a snake, and devour prey. Their prey consists of any living being, usually.

Despite this fleshy appearance, their bodies have a natural ability to morph in a way to match other humanoid races. When touched, their bodies still feel fleshy but the appearance changes to that of the race they are mimicking.

Higher Purpose

Most Carnis live their lives in forests, caves, anywhere wild where they will stalk their prey and hide before striking quickly and devouring it. However, in some rare cases, Carnis will begin to try to live as any other person would. They sometimes try to live amongst general populations, usually hiding their mouths due to the disturbing appearance and uncanny feeling that comes with it. Some of these Carnis are living amongst people to learn what it is like to be civilized instead of just mimicking those who are. Some of them do it to better learn characteristics of humanoid races to better hunt. Either way, they are not generally welcomed with open arms into large cities and towns, for general fear that they will begin luring people out of them to eat in the wild.

Disguised Danger, or Just Trying to Live?

“I remember one day, I was working my usual job as a bartender back in Baldur’s Gate, and this real tall guy walked in. He had a hood up and a mask over his mouth so I figured he was just another criminal, probably on the run from authorities. But this guy was freakishly tall for a human, so it got me thinking. After he sat down at the bar, I couldn’t help but ask ‘Hey pal, what are you, if you don’t mind me asking?’ And this guy replied with, ‘None of your business’. It’s a response I expected, but something was off about how he spoke. It was in a voice that sounded like it wanted to become several other voices, and I only saw his mouth open under that mask, but not move as if he was speaking. Like he opened his mouth and sound just came out without him actually speaking. He didn’t end up ordering anything, and as he left, I was still thinking, what even was he?”
