Homebrew Akara Demon Species Details

Born to the wrong generation

Greeted with stares and whispers, to suffer violence and insult on the street, to see mistrust and fear in every eye: this is the fate of the Akara. And to twist the knife, Akara demons are very much aware of the discrimination of their species but have little passion to break from it. Deeply embedded into the eyes of the people by the pure dragons and lizardfolk, most only know them as slave species outside of the native lands of Alure. A crime committed on them centuries ago, for which they and their children and their children’s children will always end up suffering a similar fate.

Origin Bloodline

Akara is a species derived from an old draconic bloodline, specifically related to the chromatic dragons of old. While draconic in nature and form, they still look humanoid in shape, unlike their Dragonborn counterpart. However, their heritage has left a clear imprint on their appearance. Akara have horns that take a variety of shapes: some have curling horns like a ram, others have straight and tall horns like a gazelle’s, and some spiral upward like an antelope’s horns. They have thin semi-prehensile tails, four to six feet long, with a deadly blade/spur at the end. The tails will lash or coil around their legs when they get upset or nervous. Their canine teeth are sharply pointed, and their eyes are always two-toned in color—Blue, Brown, Gold, Turquoise, etc. —with a white or black sclera and a feline pupil. Their skin tones cover the full range of human coloration but also include various shades of black/grey. Their hair, cascading down from behind their horns, is usually dark, from black or brown to dark red. In extremely rare cases one is born with white hair, and this is seen in their species as a curse. In addition to this, all are born with a set of flightless draconic or feathered wings that reflect the same color as their hair.

Self-Reliant and Suspicious

Akara subsists in small minorities mainly found in human cities or towns, often in the roughest quarters of those places, where they grow up to be swindlers, thieves, or crime lords. Sometimes they live among other minority populations in enclaves where they are treated with more respect. The majority of their species however is born info slavery.
They are not quick to trust anyone who claims to be a friend, but when an Akara demon's companions demonstrate that they trust him or her, they learn to extend the same trust to them. And once an Akara gives someone loyalty, the tiefling is a firm friend or ally for life.

Akara Demon Names

Akara Demons' names fall into three broad categories based on their origin bloodline. Akara Demons born into another culture typically have names reflective of that culture. Whereas some have names derived from the Icelandic language, passed down through generations, that reflect their heritage. And some younger Akara, striving to find a place in the world, adopt a name that signifies a virtue or other concept and then try to embody that concept. For some, the chosen name is a noble quest. For others, it’s a grim destiny.

Ignorant people tend to be suspicious of Akara demons, assuming that their chromatic draconic heritage has left its mark on their personality and morality, not just their appearance. The reality is that dragons’s bloodline doesn’t affect their personality. They are gifted with magic from the infernal realms but chart their own course in life.

Akara Demon Traits

Akara Demons share certain racial traits as a result of their draconic descent.

Ability Score Increase

Your Intelligence score increases by 1. your Charisma score increases by 1, and your Wisdom score increases by 1

Age

Akara mature at the same rate as dragons, and can live indefinitely until killed or take their own lives.

Languages

Your bloodline dates back centuries allowing your kind to speak, read, and write Common, Celestial, and Infernal.

Size

Akara are about the same size and build as humans. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet, Your base flight speed is 60 feet.

Darkvision

Thanks to your infernal heritage, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Origin Weapons

Due to your Origin blood, your Akara is born with some feisty natural weapons. Starting at 1st level they are able to make a slashing claw attack at 1d6 + STR. This increases to 2d6 at 5th level. In addition to their claws they gain a blade attack with their tail at 1d8 + STR. This attack changes from a natural weapon to a magical natural weapon at lv 5.

Origin Resistance

Due to your Origin lineage, your character has resistance to Necrotic or Fire damage

Origin Legacy

You know the Thaumaturgy cantrip. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the Hellish Rebuke or Lesser Restoration spell as a 2nd-level spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. When you reach 5th level, you can cast the Darkness spell once with this trait and regain the ability to do so when you finish a long rest. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells.

Origin Flight

Starting at [3rd] level your Akara's wings gain the ability to use flight at 60ft
