Homebrew Bloodtied Dragon Species Details

Bloodtied Dragons

Bloodtied Dragons are a race of artificial false dragons, crafted from humanoids trying to rise to the power. Through magical means, they have altered their entire being. Either by potion, blessing by god, or draconic ritual, willingly or unwillingly, the recipient have become a crude imitation of the winged tyrants. Though they may return to their original forms at will for a short time, their true form is their draconic one. These false dragons lack the elemental affinity of their cousins, leaving them more defenseless. This lack of brute strength however, is made up for in cunning, able to channel their origin into learning new or maintaining old skills and trades, something the true dragons frown upon.

An imitation falling short

Bloodtied dragons in their true form are externally identical in appearance to true dragons, possessing two wings upon their back, tails, and four legs in a quadrupedal stance. However, they are smaller than a true dragon, standing at a height roughly equivalent to a large horse, around 7-8 feet tall, with the rest of the proportions filling in. In their origin form, they look identical to whatever humanoid which they came from, though with small traits which shine their draconic nature, such as their draconic eyes remaining and small patches of scales in places which might be seen unless covered. Some rare cases possess even further traits of their true nature in their origin form, retaining their wings and or tail, though the former can nor provide enough lift to take flight in that form. In their true form, Bloodtied Dragons' scales are as diverse as the color spectrum, ranging from a simple monotone to a bright rainbow splash.

A life in hiding glory, or infamy

Society, with rare exceptions, is not very accepting of most dragons, a fact which shapes a Bloodtied's life every waking day. They live in constant fear of being exposed for who they really are and ran out of town, if not killed by an angry mob if they live in a settlement, and fear of dragon hunters finding them in their scraped together settlements if they decide to rough it in the wilds in the hopes of good loot. Others still may exploit their draconic reputation to spread terror and rule over a small enclave with an iron claw for greed or even for the sheer joy they find in causing harm. In contrast, some use their newfound powers to do good for their area, often gaining a level of trust and respect for their good deeds that allows them to be who they are in peace and acceptance.

Bloodtied Dragon names

Bloodtied Dragons' names often depend on the acceptance of their new draconic form as a part of their identity, those who embrace it as being who they are now often take up draconic names to replace their former names, either letting it die with their old self or keeping it to use as a cover in their origin forms, while those who consider themselves more as a person in a draconic body usually keep their humanoid name from their old culture and way of life as a way of remembrance of it or as a way to honor the people who got them to where they are now.

Bloodtied Dragon Traits

Bloodtied Dragons, however they were created, gain massive boons from their transformation. However, this irreversible change to their being and soul have lasting consequences on them, pulling at their psyche. The fact that their minds are also not that of the dragon, being a humanoid possessing the body of one also creates a disconnect between the two as the mind adapts to the new form, something which the character must deal with every day.

Size

In their true form, a Bloodtied Dragon stands at around 7-8 feet in height, with a length of up to 25 feet and a wingspan 1.5-2 times this length. In their origin form, they vary depending upon their origin form, though the most common of these to become a Bloodtied is a human, with rare exceptions. Your size in your true form is Large, and your Origin form is Medium.

Carrying Capacity:

As noted in the PHB p. 176, Large creatures have double the carrying capacity.

Consumables:

Based on the food and water needs (DMG p. 111), Large creatures require four times as much food and water per day. Due to your magical nature, even goodberries only satisfy your hunger if you consume four of them.

Cover:

It should be harder for a Large creature to find cover (PHB p. 196). The DM will adjudicate this, but roughly speaking where a Medium creature would find total cover, a Large creature might only receive three-quarters cover; where a Medium creature finds three-quarters cover, a Large creature might only receive half cover; and where a Medium creature finds half cover, a Large creature might find none.
