Sexual vampirism

The most common phrase associated with the Concubi is “sex vampire,” despite it’s quite inaccurate nature. Most Concubi in fact consider this phrase a slur, especially since it is quite far from the truth.

A Concubus is not a sex vampire any more than a Human being is a Calorie vampire - Concubi need to participate in intimate activities with another being in order to draw the energy that they need to live. In fact, they don’t even take that energy from the partners they engage with - Rather, it seems to manifest from another source entirely, making them quite unique in terms of both science and magic alike.

Concubi will appear as an average tiefling for their child and teenage life. They need food and water, as any other child would. For unknown reasons, around the age of nineteen or twenty on average, the most damning sign of their specific heritage begins to manifest on their body - the Lustbrand.

The Lustbrand marks all Concubi as Concubi. It manifests somewhere on their skin, appearing usually in curled shapes and abstract lines that usually represent the demonic, devilish, or other power that resides within - along with whatever deep cost it demands for that power. No matter how many (or few) clothes or armor a Concubus wears, the Lustbrand will stubbornly shine through at least faintly with usually a dim red glow. Most Lustbrands take on aesthetics of wings, waves, or even full on abstract hearts in some cases. Most often, they appear around the a Concubus’ sex, though they have been known to form on upper biceps, lower backs, between the shoulders, or the neck.

At this point on, the Concubus no longer needs to eat or drink - or even breathe - should they choose not to. Instead, energy from sex and other intimate acts sustains their existance. They often don’t seem to age much past a young adult appearance as well - as long as a Concubus feeds themselves, they can live for around five hundred years without seeming to change before passing away.

Concubi in Society

Concubi are not outright feared in most larger cities or other population centers of the world. Despite their heritage clearly showing itself, most will simply see them as another person with their own unique needs and wants. Just as any other “monstrous” race will be accepted as long as they don’t harm others, Concubi are

have been around long enough that the average person will simply enjoy their company. Of course, as is always the case, this does not always hold true.

Concubi have a tendency to group together, and generally form small, tight knit communities. These communities often serve as easy sources for any singular Concubus’ hungers. Outside of this, Concubi for obvious reasons tend to seek out professions that give them easy access to intimate encounters - Brothels, massage parlors, taverns, or elsewise. That is not to say that this is a requirement, and far from it. There are, after all, many different ways to find intimate encounters with another soul.

Unfortunately, just as much if not more so likely than being reviled in smaller cities where acceptance does not travel so easily, Concubi are sometimes sought after for their unique and specific nature. This can extend to both an individual seeking an easy night of passion to darker intents behind larger groups.

As Adventuers

Concubi will often travel, just like any other race. Whether for wanderlust, personal gain, or answers about themselves, Concubi become parts of solo adventures or parties all the time. Their rarity rarely causes any strife or issue, though in general they will be more guarded when visiting smaller and less developed areas for fear of persecution.

The Lustbrand

As much a part of the Concubi as their horns or tails, the Lustbrand is something unique to them. Though magic exists on Jariea that can manifest a similar effect or compulsion, the racial specifics of a Lustbrand and the manifestation of energy from intimate acts is a hallmark of the species.

Not every Lustbrand acts in exactly the same way. It is thought this is due to different “versions” of negative energy causing them to manifest. In general though, most will provide some form of benefit to the Concubus bearing it that is often tied to the hunger it causes. Concubi on the asexual spectrum do exist, most often asexual identities that are in some way able to either provide for or draw physical sexual pleasure from another person. It seems that through selection or some other unknown process, the Lustbrand does not manifest upon asexual Concubi who cannot or would not participate in sex - causing them to instead age, behave, and have the traits of their tiefling cousins. Contrary to popular belief, Lustbrands cannot be transferred to sexual partners under any normal situation.

Brands have wide and various effects, but generally follow an established pattern of having some kind of ability that is meant to assist the Concubus alongside causing a specific kind of hunger to flare when the Concubus uses it. As a result, a semi-standarized set of “titles” for brands exists among most Concubi circles.
