Homebrew Demiogre Species Details

"Fort Castra's praetor looked down from the ramparts at the lone mounted figure sitting before his keep's gate. He recognized the figure as a Krosian soldier, clad in banded iron and wearing a distinctive finned officer's helmet. The praetor laughed, and gloated to the figure below, 'This is the best the great Krosian Empire can muster? But one man? You are a fool to come here, and you will die a fool's death!' The Krosian looked up at him, and with half a smile, let out a shrill whistle. From the treeline, eight figures emerged and stood alongside him. The commander laughed again. 'Nine men then, what a difference that shall make!' But his smile dropped as he looked closer. These... things. They were no men. They stood as tall as the man on horseback was, head and shoulders above any man, and twice as broad. Their skin was a sickly tan-yellow pallor, and their yellow eyes glowed with a primal fury. The blood drained from the praetor's face, as he knew he looked upon his doom."

Beasts of war, the demiogres are a terrifying foe to face on the battlefield, striking fear into the hearts of even the most experienced combatant.

Bred for War

Despite what some people think from their name, demiogres are not "half-ogres," but are in fact full-blooded ogres. Unlike their wild siblings, however, the demiogres of Krosis have been selectively bred in military camps to serve as brutal weapons of war. The Krosians sought to create a more intelligent and controllable ogre, capable of following complex orders while still acting as merciless warriors. The result of this program was the demiogre. They possess the brutal strength of a typical ogre, but are smaller and smarter---though by no means are they great thinkers. They are much leaner than a normal ogre, and much more dexterous.

Most demiogres are born and raised in Legion military camps, where they are given a designation and assigned to a unit led by human commanders. Rarely, demiogres who have served with valor and have passed a psychological evaluation may be given leave to retire from the military, and live their own lives as citizens of the Empire.

All demiogres are given a tattoo on their chest, shoulder, or bicep, which depicts an ogre skull and the demiogre's designation. A circle is added around the skull to indicate a demiogre approved to leave their military service.

Civil Uncivilized

Demiogres often speak their own form of the Giant language amongst themselves, but their orders and communication with superior officers is done in common. Demiogres often speak in a broken, rudimentary form of Common. Much like the form of Giant they speak, when speaking in Common demiogres often omit pronouns and articles. When referring to themselves, they often do so in the third person. Not all demiogres possess these idiosyncrasies, but the majority do.

Demiogres, for all they might try to blend into society, are often viewed with suspicion, and are looked down upon as big brutes. They often take jobs as laborers, hunters, and mercenaries. Some find themselves joining the military again, unable to cope with their newfound freedom.

Follow the Cavalry

As the officers who lead demiogre forces are typically mounted on horseback, demiogres have developed an affinity for horses, and a natural deference for people on horseback. They are more likely to listen to people who are mounted on horses, and though they would have considerable difficulty riding a horse themselves, they still derive much enjoyment from seeing and interacting with horses.

Demiogre Names

Demiogres are given designations in the military: a letter to signify their unit, followed by a dash and a number, indicating the individual. While in the military, most do not have names beyond their designation. However, those who leave the military take on their own names. Their first name can be anything: sometimes a giantish or orcish name, a Krosian name, a descriptor, or some other combination of letters they thought sounded good as a name. Their last names are often derived from their designation, a blending or slurring of the letter and number. Their last name may also be a descriptor or be derived from some feat they performed in the military.
