Homebrew Awakened Skeleton Species Details
Awakened Skeletons, unlike regular Skeletons, retain the consciousness and intelligence (although possibly not all of their memories) which they once had a a living person.
Their origin and existence is a mystery and they are often feared and forced to hide their true nature because of their frightening appearance.
Awakened Skeleton Traits
You have the following racial traits.Darkvision
You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Awakened Skeletal Nature
Your nature as an Awakened Skeleton differs slightly from a regular Skeleton, as you still retain some life within your undeath.
- You are resistant to poison damage and have advantage on saving throws against being poisoned.
- You don’t need to eat, drink, or breathe.
- You are immune to disease.
- You don’t need to sleep, and magic can’t put you to sleep.
- You are immune to effects that turn undead.
- If a spell has the sole effect of restoring you to life, the caster only needs 1/3th the cost of material components to cast the spell on you.
Play Dead
Your undead nature grants you the ability to fool your enemies in thinking that you have been defeated. When you take damage, as a reaction you can choose to play dead; when you do so you immediatly fall prone and make a Deception or Performance (Charisma, Wisdom or Intelligence) check contested against an Insight, Perception or Investigation check of the creature(s) you are trying to deceive, creatures that fail this contest believe that you have been killed by the damage and consider you "dead" and act accordingly (DM's discretion).
- If the damage you took is not equal or greater than 1/3rd of your current hitpoints (rounded up), the creature(s) have Advantage on the check.
- If the damage you took is equal or greater than half your total hitpoints (rounded down), you have Advantage on the check.
- If a creature has an Intelligence or Wisdom score of 6 or less you have Advantage on your check and they have Disadvantage on their check regardless of the damage taken.
- If there are multiple enemies on an encounter and some creatures see through your deception but others don't, a creature that has succeded on their check can use an Action to alert another creature that has failed on their check in order to alert them of your deception.
While playing dead, any Action, Bonus Action, Reaction, Movement or Ability which involves any normally noticeable movement, speech or similar visual indicator coming from yourself (discuss with your DM) will immediately end your Play Dead and alert all creatures. (Discuss with your DM when it comes to effects that can be ambiguous as to whether they would be noticeable while playing dead).
Your next Attack on a creature(s) deceived by your Play Dead feature has Advantage.
A creature can no longer be affected by the effects Play Dead for the remainder of the encounter after seeing through your deception.
You can also use the Play Dead feature outside of a combat encounter, in which case you have Advantage on your check and a creature has Disadvantage on their check.
Frightful Appearance
Your skeletal appearance is something most people find frightening, disturbing or disgusting; you must often hide your true appearance from view by some means in order to avoid persecution, but even then, your true nature still lingers. You have Disadvantage on Persuasion checks and Advantage on Intimidation checks, except against creatures that for any reason would not be afraid of your presence (DM's discretion).
Creature Type
You are considered both a Humanoid and an Undead.
Size
Your size is Medium.
Speed
Your walking speed is 30 ft.
