Homebrew Axolfolk Species Details

A rare race, that lives in isolated communities in lakes on mountains. They all have large tails and 3 pairs of external gills on their head. They come in various colours but are usually one colour only and nothing of a blue pigment. Cuisine and flavour are oft not cared about in Axolfolk culture due to Axolfolk not having teeth and using a vacumn to eat food. An Axolfolk starts life entirely aquatic until it reaches adulthood at 15 and can start to walk on land.

Axolfolk Traits

The axolfolk has these natural traits

Amphibious

Thanks to their external gills and lungs they can breathe in water and on land

Size

Axolfolkvary anywhere from 4ft to 7ft on average when fully grown. An axolfolk's tail reaches up to or beyond it's head. Your size is either small or medium.

Age

Axolfolk's aren't hugely long lived living on average to 60-80 years old. An axolfolk is born from a clutch of 30-40 eggs in the water and are born fully aquatic with no legs or arms, slowly growing them as the grow larger and upon reaching adulthood at age 15 they become fully able to traverse both water and land and stop growing. Axolfolk's show no visible signs of aging once they reach maturity, with a 70 year old axolfolk looking identical to how they did when they were first able to walk on land.

Youthful regeneration

Axolfolks have excellent regenerative abilities and have no issue regenerating limbs and even damage to organs and the brain and eyes sometimes if the original damage wasn't fatal and given enough time -at least 5 weeks. You get a pool of HP equal your proficiency + levelx2 + constitution mod that replenishes with a long rest. You may use this pool of HP to heal yourself as a bonus action on your turn. If you lose a limb roll a d4. The result is how many weeks it takes to fully grow back

Poor eyesight

Axolfolk's have poor eyesight due to the lakes they live in usually having murky bottoms and have a better sense of smell as to compensate. All rolls involving your eyes have a -2 modifier to them

Checks involving your sense of smell have +2 to the roll

Vibration Sensor

Due to poor eyesight Axolfolks evolved a different way to detect those in their surroundings. This is works better in the water than on land. Tremorsense range of 20 ft on land and 35ft in water

Water Dependent

Due to an axolfolk's soft skin and amphibious nature they must spend some time submerged in water every day, if they don't they dry out and start suffering a level of exhaustion every day they go without submerging in water.

Language

Can Speak, Read and Write Common, and Axotalkl

Axotalkl is a language that axolotl's use to communicate with each other using a combination of noises, scents and vibrations made by different movements and objects.

Heat Hater

Axolfolkl's can't stand very high temperatures and if they don't spend time water whilst travelling through areas of very high temperature the effects are worse than usual.

Taking a short or long rest in very high temperatures whilst not submerged in water gives you a level of exhaustion and you recover no HP, hit die or spell slots. You also can't use the Youthful regeneration trait in very high temperatures if you have any levels of exhaustion.

Disease Resistant

Your immune system stays forever strong never wavering to the passage of time and you have advantage on saving throws against poison and disease.

Toothless

axolfolks in their natural homes mainly subsist on a diet of worms, insects, crustaceans, molluscs and some small species of fish ; whatever can be sucked down into the stomach without causing choking due to a lack of teeth. Axolfolks have quite a powerful vacumn that lets them suck food into their mouth and into their gullet. The lack of teeth means food doesn't spend much time in the mouth of an axolotl, therefore flavour and cuisine isn't a huge part of axolfolk culture.
