Homebrew Banshee Species Details
Commonly a depicted as a female spirit, the banshee visits a household and by wailing she warns them that a member of their family is about to die. At times she is seen in lonely places, beside a pool or stream, washing the linen of those soon to die, folding and beating it with her hands on a stone in the middle of the water. Banshees are supernatural creatures that can predict death. There are two types of Banshee. No matter their origins, all Banshees have the same abilities at their disposal, whether it comes naturally, or requires training.
(In rare cases, Men can become Banshees. This is normally from being the only child in their generation, coming from a family of Banshees. These men are jokingly referred to as Ban-hes. However, most male banshees are not fond of this. Male and female banshees have no difference in power levels and abilities )
Banshee Traits
Due to their abilities, they haveAbility Score Increase
Your Charisma score increases by 2, and your Dexterity score increases by 1.
Age*
For Subrace:
For Half Banshees, you have the age length of a human. You live less than or maybe up to a century. (Unless you change subrace)
For True Banshees, you are already dead, and live as an undead. You roam the world until you settle your vendetta.
For Silver Banshees, you either live human life or undead life.
Alignment*
This changes depending on Subrace. Or on what the alignments are for your fellow party members in your campaign. Ask your Dungeon Master about the tone and direction of the story, and have them give you a recommended alignment to give your character.
For Subrace:
Half Banshees have access to all alignments
True Banshees are limited to Chaotic Neutral, Lawful Evil, Neutral Evil, and Chaotic Evil (Your Dungeon Master can change this if absolutely necessary, but try to stay within these four alignments if playing a True Banshee)
Silver Banshees also have access to all alignments
Languages
You can speak, read, and write Common and one extra language of your choice.
Darkvision
Due to your undead ancestry, you can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. However, you can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Fey Ancestry
You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can’t put you to sleep.
Ethereal Shroud
You can use your action to tap into the preternatural energy within you, causing your form to grow luminous, shimmer, and float. Any loose garments or hair begin to flutter and stream around you.
Your transformation lasts for 1 minute or until you end it as a bonus action. While cloaked in the shroud, you have a flying (hover) speed of 40 feet, and once on each of your turns, you can deal extra necrotic damage to one target when you deal damage to it with an attack or spell.
The extra necrotic damage starts at 1d4 at 1st level and increases to 2d4 at 8th level, and 3d4 at 14th level.
Once you use this trait, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
Banshee Wail
Starting at 1st level* , you have a greater understanding of your heritage and can use your action to let out a horrifying scream. The wail has no effect on constructs or undead. Anything small or fragile (glass, natural ice, ceramics, etc) within 30 feet of you will shatter. All other creatures within 30 feet of you that can hear you must make a Constitution saving throw. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Charisma modifier + your proficiency bonus.
A creature takes 2d6 psychic damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. The damage increases to 3d6 at 6th level, 4d6 at 11th level, and 5d6 at 16th level.
After using your hypersonic wail, you can’t use it again until you complete a short or long rest.
*If your character is on the story arc of a human learning of their abilities, this does not start until level 3. If you try to use this before your abilities activate, this does ntohing, and you scream as if you are a normal human. If you are an untrained Banshee, this is the only supernatural ability you can use.
Focused Cry
*Trained Banshees are able to use this ability. Using their hands, they can focus their scream and use it offensively. *Roll your dice to test the strength of this attack. At its weakest, you can push a full grown human male back a few feet. At its strongest you can stop a moving car (which are not common in D&D but that is the example im using). Common uses of this atack include launching opponents, deflecting or destroying projectiles (arrows, bullets, etc. Will not work on magic attacks. The only exception to this is if you encounter another character of the Banshee race, and you and your opponent both use this attack.
*If you are not going to focus on training as a story arc, you can use this ability at level 7.
*To roll for this attack, roll the hit die of your class
Glide*
After running for 15 seconds in a straight line, you begin to drift off the ground. Your speed gradually increases, but you stop gaining speed once you reach the speed of 60 feet. When gliding, the sound of wings flapping is made, however, they do not actually sprout or have wings. It is unknown why this is.
For Subrace:
For Half Banshees, this ability is passive, you have no control and this happens naturally.
*For True Banshees, this ability is permanent, unless it is a full moon, blood moon, or you use the solidify ability.
*For Silver Banshees, you have full control and can use this on and off at all times.
*For True and SIlver Banshees, you can also control altitude, thus it is basically flying. This is not an option for Half Banshees
Intangability*
Your physical form is untouchable when using this ability.
For subraces:
The function of this ability changes per subrace. If you change subrace mid campaign, please remember to change this for your character.
For Half Banshees this ability takes intense concentration, meaning they can use this on and off for up to a minute per long rest.
For True Banshees, this is your natural state and this ability makes you solid. However, during a full moon or blood moon you are solid for the entirety of the night.
For Silver Banshees, you can use this ability on and off easily with no concentration up to five minutes per long rest.
Invisibility*
You become invisible to the eyes of living creatures. You can still be seen by undead, or anyone with enhanced or magic sight. You can still be found by creatures who have enhanced smell and hearing, like Werewolves for example.
For Subraces:
The function of this ability changes per subrace. If you change subrace mid campaign, please remember to change this for your character. For True and Silver banshees, please consult your Dungeon Master on length of time.
For Half Banshees, you can use this ability on and off for up to one minute per long rest
For True Banshees, this ability is heightened. You can use this ability on and off for up to five minutes per long rest
For Silver Banshees, this ability is heightened again. You can use this ability on and off for up to 10 minutes per full rest
Banshee Transformation*
During campaign, in rare instances, WITH THE PERMISSION OF YOUR DUNGEON MASTER, you can change subrace. This normally happens once during campaign, but can happen twice.
For Subrace:
Half Banshees can either transform into True or Silver Banshees.
True Banshees can become Silver Banshees, but cannot become Half Banshees
Once either a Half or True Banshee becomes a Silver Banshee, they are permanently in this Subrace, nothing can change them.
Telekinesis
With your mind, you can lift, move, and control objects. Roll your classes hit dice to see your power level. The higher you roll, the larger and heavier the object you can move. At its lowest, you can lift and move a human child. At its strongest, you can push back a Fully Grown dragon a few feet. If the roll is more than half of the maximum amount possible on the die, you cannot use it until after a long rest. If less than half of the maximum amount possible on the die, you can use it once more before a long rest.
Banshee Intuition*
Banshees are capable of predicting death of any sentient being, race or species irrelevant. All banshees hear voices that tell them who will die, however it works differently for different subraces.
*A Banshee cannot predict their own death
For Subrace:
For Half Banshees, they hear voices telling them what will happen. Many Half Banshees, who aren't as familiar with their abilities, wont understand what is happening, and many people will believe them insane, or sometimes the Half Banshee will ignore them. However this can be a bad idea. Many times when this happens, they wont realize what is happening until the person has already died. Often times after this happens, they will subconsciously go to where the person has died, and often times is the first to see their dead body. If the Half Banshee ignores the vices, the will become louder. Sometimes, they will become so loud that they kill the Half Banshee. The only way to quiet them if they reach that volume is by screaming, which can be dangerous to Party Members.
For True Banshees, while they do sometimes hear voices, they have a much better understanding of what is happening. The voices tell them who will die, and they will then appear at the home of the person, will scream, and disappear. This is normal behavior for True Banshees, and is really all that they do, besides attack travelers during the night.
For Silver Banshees, they dont have to wait to figure out whats happening from voices. (The voices never directly tell a Banshee who will die, the Banshee must learn from the riddles and clues the voices give). The voices immediately tell them who will die next. And unlike Half and True Banshees, the voices will tell SIlver Banshees how the person will die.
