Homebrew Avian Species Details

An ancient descendant of the mighty aarakocra, the avian race share many similarities with their bird-like ancestors. From the strong, muscled legs that give the avians their speed, to the small feathered wings that sprout from their spines. Though the Avian race has lost their ability to fly a long time ago, they long for the freedom of the skies, and these peaceful creatures of air can be seen gliding from one place to another aloft on the near vestigial wings on their backs.

Speedy, but Flightless

Often confused for adolescent aarakocra, the main indicator of an avian individual is their humanoid face, a mouth and lips whereas their ancestors may of had a beak. They can accurately mimic voices and languages, but must have heard the sound aloud in the last 2 hours before repeating it. Standing upright, an avian might range from 4-5 feet tall, held over short, but powerful legs. They can reach speeds of up to 40 feet, but most individuals are comfortable around 35. Their large feet are capable of grasping, but are not as tactile as their hands. All 4 claws are tipped with deadly talons.

Feathers cover their bodies based on their sub race and the temperature in which they reside. Northern avians may have thicker plumage, with feathered arms, legs, backs, which crawl up over their shoulders. Southern avians on the other hand may only have the basic facial feathers, and wings. Males tend to be more brightly colored, with feathers of red, orange, or yellow. Females have more subdued colors, usually brown or gray.

Earthbound

Since the avians lack the ability to fly, most individuals find themselves with an intense fear of caves and small spaces. To be grounded, trapped underground, or imprisoned by the cold, unyielding earth is a torment few avians can withstand. They are a very anxious species, prone to running rather than fighting. Confinement terrifies the members of the avian species. And are usually found high above the ground, even when perched on a tall branch they appear alert, with eyes moving and bodies ready to bolt at the slightest movement.

Bird-like Mannerisms

Much like aarakocra, avian resemblance to birds isn’t limited to physical features. They display many of the same mannerisms as ordinary birds. They are fastidious about their plumage, frequently tending their feathers, cleaning and scratching away any tiny passengers they might have picked up.

Avians punctuate their speech with tweets and chirps, sounds they make not necessarily of their own accord. They subconsciously mimic noises, and are prone to stealing. Shiny, glittering objects catch their eyes. An avian who spends years among other races can learn to inhibit these impulses. 

Nomadic

Avians rarely stay in one space, travelling through towns and villages frequently in search of work. Avians will only find themselves locked to one spot whilst nursing an egg, or when they are physically incapable of moving.

Avian Traits

As an avian, you have certain traits in common with your people. Being able to run at high speed starting at 1st level is exceptionally effective in certain circumstances and exceedingly dangerous in others. As a result, playing an avian requires special consideration by your DM.

Ability Score Increase

Your Dexterity score increases by 3, and your Constitution score increases by 1.

Age

Aarakocra reach maturity by age 3. Compared to humans, aarakocra don’t usually live longer than 30 years.

Alignment

Avians tend to lean more towards chaotic, finding solace  in the wayward flow of the winds. They rarely choose sides when it comes to good vs evil.

Size

Avians are about 4-5 feet tall. They have thin, lightweight bodies that weigh between 70 and 100 pounds. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 35 feet.

Gliding

You have a gliding speed of 15 feet. To use this speed, you can’t be wearing medium or heavy armor.

Talons

Your talons are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal slashing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

You can speak, read, and write Common, Aarakocra, and Auran.
