Homebrew Cottion Species Details

"The severed body stumbled back, but stopped moments before continuing a descent to the ground. Only half of the stomach and down remained, yet the body refused to fall. I watched as this monstrosity began to reform its body before my very eyes. Vines and roots twisted out of its body in every direction, recreating the frame that was missing to its vessel. Within a matter of seconds, the full torso had reformed and than eventually, the head. It was only than that I realized, I would have to do more than slice the body to kill this...monster.

I realized early on in the fight that these people seemed weak to fire. While you could temporarily take them out of the fight with simple weapons, fire might be one of the only option to obliterate the creature's ability to reform and live. Truly, this form of human is a force to be reckoned with."

-Ashen Spark, Mercenary Of The Blazing Heart

While most humans heavily vary on their natural form of alignment, cottions tend to be a bit more on the lawful side. This is due to the code of protection that they feel towards nature.

Human Scum

Similar to the common human, cottions tend to share extremely similar physical traits since they are a variant of human. There are a few differences however compared to normal humans. White hair is common among the cottions. Different forms of natural hair colors often relate to the plants they are related to. White haired cottions tend to be related to cotton plants and dandelions, black haired cottions tend to be related to black roses and death flowers, ect. Besides that, cottions are completely comprised of plant matter, but take the appearance of humans.

Combined Resilience

Both humans and plants have been known to be resilient. Often fighting against the test of time, humans and plants have often tested their iron against anything life throws at them. Len, the god of nature, made sure that the cottions would fit right in. Rather than rolling death saves when downed, cottions instead slowly begin to regenerate their bodies over the span of 30 seconds to 5 days counting on their exposure to sunlight, the amount of sunlight pool left over once downed, and if they will continue to have access to said sunlight. In order to fully kill a cottion after downing them, you must set them ablaze. The fire will need to consume the body until nothing but ash is left. Necrotic and cold magic are also valid options as they have been known to eat away at plant life.

Cottion Culture

When it comes to classes, cottions have some common tendencies on what they often lean towards. The majority of cottions tend to lean toward the druid class, the paladin class, the cleric class, and the fighter class. Cottions excel as paladins and fighters due to their protective nature. They often make good druids due to their connection to nature. With the blessing of Len, they have become quite skilled at healing thus making them amazing clerics.

Most cottions tend to lean towards physical jobs. Their natural craving for order often leads them to engage with guard jobs, bouncers for hire, mercenary work, and other means. Physical work like farming, lumberjacking, and construction are also quite common among the cottions. Cottions are known to be harder working than the average human. Perhaps this is due to the extra pools of energy while working in the sun.

While most cottions tend to live in towns as they are rather social people, some cottions prefer to live amongst nature. Cottions that live among nature tend to claim a tree that they will center their livelihood around. Their home, farm, and everything they needs will be built around the tree. Lanterns are commonly spread within 200 ft. of the tree as to not only mark their land, but so they may see any intruders/dangers in the night. These lanterns are often construed amongst the trees with rope or other means.

Still Human

Cottions are still humans at the end of the day. Calling them an "alien" simply because they are different is a good way to confirm your death sentence date. Don't be that guy.

Luckily for the cottions, the god of luck blessed them with the ability to regenerate. Since their body mass is completely created of complicated system of plant life acting as replacements for organs, blood, ect, they were given the ability to regenerate using the leftover sunlight that they had soaked in throughout the day. Once a turn, a cottion may heal themselves for a d10 of health as a bonus action. After using all charges, the sunlight pool cannot be recharged until a long rest is taken in the sunlight.

Healing die upgrades on levels 5, 10, 15, and 20.

Walking Plant Life

Len, the God of Nature, chose to bless the cottions with a complex system of plant life that replaces the organs and need for blood. Cottions can eat food, sleep, and do other such necessities like normal humans if they wish to do so, but they do have the ability to skip eating with photosynthesizing. Doing so not only allows them to hold off on eating and sleeping, but it restocks the sunlight pool. Water is still very much needed. Due to having no blood, blood curses from blood hunters will not work on them. On top of this, the cottions have a natural access to the cantrip thorn whip as they can simply sling the thorn vine out of their arm.

Plant Resilience

Rather than rolling death saves when downed, cottions instead slowly begin to regenerate their bodies over the span of 30 seconds to 5 days counting on their exposure to sunlight, the amount of sunlight pool left over once downed, and if they will continue to have access to said sunlight. In order to fully kill a cottion after downing them, you must set them ablaze. The fire will need to consume the body until nothing but ash is left. Necrotic and cold magic are also valid options as they have been known to eat away at plant life.

For each turn that you are hit while down, you fail a death save. For each turn that you get through unharmed while down, you succeed a death save. On three fails, you die. On three successes, you stand back up with 1 hp. You may rejoin the fight in the next turn.
