Homebrew Yuan-Ti, The Serpentfolk Species Details

Yuan-ti were once human beings who used age-old rituals to change into snake people. The majority of yuan-ti were transformed into monsters by those rites, but some of them evolved into a new race that combines human and snake traits.

Each of these yuan-ti expresses their serpentine history in a number of ways: a forked tongue, snake eyes, a snakelike snout, or some other ophidian trait, blessed by the ceremonies that formed them with resilience to magical and toxic effects. A yuan-ti can pursue immense good or evil in the multiverse regardless of how they appear.

You can choose from three types of subraces if you play this race: Abomonation, Malison or Pureblood.

Yuan-Ti, The Serpentfolk Traits

Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells when you cast them with this trait (choose when you select this race).

Yuan-Ti Abomination

Abominations are the greatest caste of yuan-ti civilization and most nearly resemble the race as the serpent gods meant it. They are monstrous serpents with bulky humanoid torsos and arms. They plan complex strategies and carry out sinister rituals in the hopes of gaining world dominance in the future.

Your target must succeed in a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw, or you can wrap yourself around it, making it grappled. Your target can only escape by succeeding in a DC 14 Strength saving throw. Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained, and you can’t Constrict another target or move until you release it.

Yuan-ti Malison

A Malison is a horrible fusion of serpentine and human traits. Malisons can come in three different varieties, and there may be more. Yuan-ti society's middle caste, the malisons, hunt with arrows that are tipped with their own venom. They compel their adversaries to submit using their mystical power of suggestion.

Serpentine Body Dependence

You gain specific abilities depending on the type of body you posess. You can only choose one between these three body types:

1. Human body with snake head. If you choose this body type, you gain + 2 proficency bonus to your Survival checks. You can also make a Bite attack against your target, dealing 1d6 + STR piercing or poison damage.

2. Human head and body with snakes for arms. If you choose this body type, you gain + 2 proficency bonus to your Perception checks. You can also use your snake arms to make two unarmed strikes. Each successful attack deals 1d8 + DEX poision damage. Having this body type, you cannot wield any kind of weapon or shield, unless you succeed in a DC 15 Dexterity (Athletics) check everytime you try to pick up one. If you succeed you can only hold it for one hour, and for one turn in combat.

3. Human head and upper body with a serpentine lower body instead of legs. If you choose this body type, you gain + 2 proficency bonus to your History Checks. You can also use the Constrict abilty against your target, who must make a DC 12 Dexterity saving throw or it will take 1d4 bludgening damage and be grappled until it succeeds in a DC 12 Strength saving throw.

Yuan-Ti Pureblood

All that is left of a bygone, degenerate human empire are the serpent-like creatures known as yuan-ti purebloods. They learned profane, cannibalistic rituals from their dark gods long ago, mixing their flesh with snakes', creating a caste-based society of hybrids where the most snakelike are the rulers and the most humanlike are spies and agents abroad.

Ability Score Increase

Your Charisma or Intelligence score increases by 1.

Merrshaulk’s Slumber

All creatures within 60 feet of you must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution saving throw or fall into a magical sleep and be unconscious for 10 minutes. The sleeping target wakes up if it takes damage or if someone uses an action to shake or slap it awake. This magical sleep has no effect on a creature immune to being charmed.
