Homebrew Aloppenian Species Details

Aloppenian resemble small toy breed dogs but with lush and beautiful fur with unique markings, their fur ranges from white to merle, with some even having bright colors and markings not found in common dog breeds. They are proportional standing around 2 to 4 feet tall and tend toward the rotund. Their fur covers much of their body and their hands and toes sport mild webbing between the pads with serviceable opposable thumbs on their hands. They can walk on all fours or upright easily changing their gait based on their situation. As they are native to a small atoll they are surprisingly adept swimmers, with their fur protecting them from the elements and allowing them to float easily.

The Aloppenians do not possess the ability to speak the common tongues. Rather they communicate using an incredibly involved system of kinesics with over 10,000 unique gestures, vocalizations and pheromone secretons. Through which they can communicate a deep conveyance of emotions and ideas. Naturally empathic and peaceful, Aloppenians lead private and somewhat ascetic existences. They have a preternatural proclivity to telepathy thus facilitating communication with other races.

As they are so adept at the arcane arts, some Aloppenians have found their way to the Universities of Dammarel and the Arcaneum of Old Vebia where they are highly regarded and respected. Unfortunately they are possessed of an incredibly brief life, with the oldest Aloppenian reaching only to the age of 9. Therefore, their presence at the great houses of learning is treated with much awe and reverence as some have dedicated their entire lives to the pursuit of knowledge and the service of the great institutions.

Adept Swimmer

Advantage on all athletics checks when swimming.

Innate Telepathy

You can speak telepathically to any creature you can see within 60 feet of you. Your telepathic utterances are in a language you know, and the creature understands you only if it knows that language. Your communication doesn't give the creature the ability to respond to you telepathically.

You can cast the Detect Thoughts spell, requiring no spell slot or components, and you must finish a long rest before you can cast it this way again. Your spellcasting ability for the spell is the ability increased by this feat. If you have spell slots of 2nd level or higher, you can cast this spell with them.
