Homebrew Dragon Species Details

True dragons are of ancient lineage and fearsome power. They are known and feared for their predatory cunning and greed, with the oldest dragons accounted as some of the most powerful creatures in the world. Dragons are also magical creatures whose innate power fuels their dreaded breath weapons and other preternatural abilities.

Dragon Traits

Your draconic heritage manifests in a variety of traits you share with other dragons

Shapechange

You have begun to master your innate magical abilities and as such you can as an action polymorph yourself into any medium or small humanoid you have seen. This ability is limited to one use per long rest.

Darkvision

You can see in dim light within 60 feet of yourself as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You discern colors in that darkness only as shades of gray.

Ability Score Increase

Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Charisma score increases by 1.

Age

Dragons increase in size slowly over hundreds of years eventually becoming gargantuan if they live long enough. A dragon’s natural lifespan is around 1200 years although some live much longer.

Size

Dragon sizes vary by subraces but most young dragons range from medium to large, and adult dragons large and huge. Ancient dragons are often gargantuan.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet. In true form, you have additional flying speed of 30 feet.

Draconic Ancestry

You have draconic ancestry. Choose one type of dragon from the Draconic Ancestry table. Your breath weapon and damage resistance are determined by the dragon type, as shown in the table.

Breath Weapon

You can only use this ability while in true dragon form. You can use your action to exhale destructive energy. Your draconic ancestry determines the size, shape, and damage type of the exhalation. When you use your breath weapon, each creature in the area of the exhalation must make a saving throw, the type of which is determined by your draconic ancestry. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. A creature takes 2d6 damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. The damage increases to 3d6 at 6th level, 4d6 at 11th level, and 5d6 at 16th level. After you use your breath weapon, you can’t use it again until you complete a short or long rest.

Damage Resistance

You have resistance to the damage type associated with your draconic ancestry.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common and Draconic. Draconic is thought to be one of the oldest languages and is often used in the study of magic. The language sounds harsh to most other creatures and includes numerous hard consonants and sibilants.
