Homebrew Azapian Species Details

A race hailing from the Fey Realm, the Azapian are bipedal bee-folk who excel in organized social structures. The first azapian were made by Lady Linnea Morningsong; a sentimental and powerful archfey from the illustrious Court of Spring.

"In the court of buzzing bees, a dance begins to bloom, Their wings adorned in regal hues, a symphony of perfume. With grace they sway in ballroom air, a dazzling display, Their honeyed steps entwined, a monarch's grand ballet."

— Introductory passage, Ballad of the Bumblebee

A Buzzing Fable

Once upon a time, in the realm of Fey, resided the enchanting Lady Linnea Morningsong, an Archfey of the illustrious Court of Spring. Amidst her solitary garden, she sought solace, as suitors had failed her, leaving her yearning for the enchanting galas she had only read about in mortal tales. Disenchanted by her own court's inhabitants, she found comfort in the company of her beloved flowers, tending to them diligently, addressing each bee by its name as it gently danced upon the petals.

One fateful day, an idea sprouted within Lady Linnea's heart. She approached the noble hive and, with her magical touch, transformed it into a colossal castle. The bumblebees, now graced with anthropomorphic forms and the gift of speech, became her devoted servants, each possessing independent thoughts. In this newfound realm, she fashioned a kingdom of her own, where she and the queen bee reigned supreme, their radiance unmatched by any other. The Lady Linnea gifted these new beings the name "Azapian" and acted as their esteemed benefactor, orchestrating splendid events for her newfound subjects.

Embracing the refined customs of royal courts, the azapians hosted grand balls and regal feasts that surpassed even the wildest dreams of the fair lady herself. Within this enchanted world, joy and merriment abounded, bringing to life a fairy-tale realm more magnificent than she could have ever imagined.

Eusociality and Solitary

Azapians have evolved into a diverse species since their inception and have approached the organization of their continued prosperity in two primary ways: eusociality and solitarily. A eusocial azapian is typically part of a hive, where all azapians are autocratically governed by a singular entity: the potentate, or more commonly, the queen. The potentate, usually the largest female in the hive, assumes the exclusive role of reproduction. She will collect a harem of all male drones in the hive and undertake the laying of new eggs for the hive, choosing the sex of each new member as she lays. The rest of the colony outside of the queen's personal haram is entirely composed of female azapian workers, who are responsible for the functionality of the rest of the hive.

An azapian that develops outside of a hive setting is what would be considered a solitary azapian. Solitary azapians typically eschew the vast, organized structures found within a hive, opting for a more independent lifestyle. They often seek singular mates and create their own homes in the most hospitable environments available to them.

Cycle of Life

Within the confines of a conventional hive, all eggs are laid by the colony potentate, who is able to determine whether the eggs are fertilized or not by her drones. In eusocial circles, fertilized eggs will always produce female azapians (or workers), while unfertilized eggs will always produce male azapians (drones).

In the event of the potentate's death, the unhatched eggs are assessed by the colony's caretakers, who ascertain the healthiest and most viable female egg. Once hatched, the larva will be fed an enriched diet of royal jelly, a superfood only given to larvae in their first week of life. The chosen larva's diet, however, will persist for the entire duration of their development and only stop once they have fully reached maturity. Due to this robust diet, the new potentate will be much larger than her fellow kin and have an iron fortitude. If a replacement is not designated within a week of the potentate's death, all of the eggs will no longer be viable, and the hive will inevitably crumble, forcing the azapians to either become solitary or seek out another hive.

During times of war, a potentate may authorize workers to begin laying unfertilized eggs, quickly amassing forces of ephemeral drones that will live and die protecting the hive. This dire decree is often only feasible as long as they maintain robust stocks of food, as the process is incredibly energy-demanding.

Hive Kingdoms

An azapian kingdom meticulously defines its borders amidst expansive, lush woodlands and fertile landscapes, perfect for their horticultural aspirations. Embracing harmony with nature, they ingeniously utilize the elements and plant life in their architectural designs. Great trees provide the raw materials; their sturdy wood fibers combined with fortified beeswax form the foundations of their remarkable structures. Distinct from traditional constructions, azapian architecture eschews conventional entrances and roads, reflecting the aerial nature of their people, who often opt to navigate the skies above.

The allure of establishing trade and fostering relations with azapian hive-cities lies in their remarkable ability to export abundant quantities of food, grains, dyes, and medicines, all cultivated with utmost care for the surrounding ecosystems. Hive-cities constantly seek to expand their horticultural outposts, accommodating rare floral species and transforming underutilized areas into vibrant habitats. Notably, the azapian nobility demonstrates a penchant for indulging in eccentric imports, including foreign scriptures, captivating artworks, enlightening tomes, and an array of curious treasures.

Meeting of Many Minds

At the heart of a eusocial hive resides a potentate who wields incredibly powerful psionic abilities and unifies the hive's collective consciousness. Unlike traditional hiveminds, the potentate fosters an extraordinary balance, allowing each individual within the hive to maintain their free will and independent thought.

Within the hive, azapians harmoniously dance to the rhythm of shared knowledge and empathic connection. The monarch, revered as a beacon of wisdom and guidance, serves as the nexus that interweaves their minds into a cohesive whole. This unique arrangement offers the azapians the gift of communal understanding and collective decision-making, all while honoring their individuality.

The azapian culture thrives on cooperation, synergy, and mutual respect. Every member contributes their own skills, talents, and perspectives, enriching the hive with their unique experiences. Together, they embrace a harmonious existence, drawing strength from the shared consciousness while treasuring their personal identities. In this extraordinary civilization, the azapians exemplify the extraordinary potential of a hivemind where free will and unity coexist, creating a culture that celebrates both the collective and the individual.
