Homebrew Wulvere Species Details

Many years ago, I came across an interesting fellow. It was later in my adventuring work, so I was in for surprise at my discovery. I was quite aware of the others of the realm, but even those I had uncommon encounters with were unlike him. Being close to the caves and caverns, I had assumed they were on an adventure to figure the secrets inside.

Snatching my book out of its place in my satchel, he hummed and scratched a few words out of a page. I kept a keen eye on his face, sturdy horns and an bovine-like nose standing out the most.

"M'apologies, you have wrote wrongs about us folk. Keep it'n your mind's eye" I was left in confusion as he turned around, cool-toned tail swishing after returning the journal. Whatever he was left me with many questions and needed queries. I had asked the fellow of this.

"Need not find yourself without answers with me, Wulvere-folk give you needed knowledge" The way he spoke left me with more confusion, keeping my mouth slightly open.

What was their society like? Was it in the caverns? All of the many jewels and bobbles attatched to his person suggested riches, maybe even a form of nobility. What would that mean for our world topside? My questions made him simply laugh with a hollow sound.

"Like yours, dark and dreary. Full of knowledge, that which I would like in return. What do you have for trade?"

The Tome of Many Species

The Wulvere folk are a cavern-dwelling species. Being bound to many places underground, what they seek the most is knowledge. Most mistaken for Firbolgs or Tieflings, they can be found in forests near mountains or caves, often wandering around looking for people or creatures to ask for trades of knowledge.

Appearance

They appear humanoid, with larger ears and cloven hooves. Their skintones are often in shades of purple or blue, though it isn't unheard of for them to have warmer colours. With this, they have markings across their cheeks in a lighter shade of their skintone.

Wulveres also have more animal-like traits such as their bovine-like noses, tipped fingers, hooves, and their furred ears. Their teeth are similar to orcs or lycanthropes, canines larger and protruding outside of the mouth. Eyes can vary, as the pupils could resemble a variety of different creatures such as goats or birds.

Tails have a light patching of fur, sometimes growing longer at the end. Their horns can be a variety of shapes, but they are most often symmetrical when left in their natural and undamaged state. If damaged, it can grow inwards into the base or stray into several pieces of horns like branches.

Hair is usually in lighter colours, though the colour of hair on their head is also the colour of fur atop their hooves and patched on their tails and knees.

Society

In the caves and caverns, surrounded only by ground and jewels, they found a profound fascination and curiosity about the outside world. Knowledge has since become one of the most important parts of their culture. They often view this pursuit as noble and reward those who come back with refined things such as a title or jewels.

Knowledge, in their eyes, is a trade. Among travelers they exchange their words of the world for newer pieces to give back to their community. They have a large communal museum of sorts, working as an ever-expanding library. Along with knowledge, they exchange technologies and often take what they find outside of their walls.

Many places in their society work as spaces for knowledge and work, more often than not also areas for arcane teachings. Wizards and Sorcerers are common and work in positions of power, such as in law or governing.

Wulvere Naming Conventions

Their names are often influenced by gemstones, nature, star structures, or other figures in their society. They are harsher in sound and include many vowels.

Examples can include: Rhubxio, Vhiao, Ciriuse, Belitriche

Wulvere Traits

They have many strange attributes due to their way of life outside the light.

Nightvision

The life in the caverns is dark and full of surprises, which leads to the need for increased light in the eyes. They can navigate through the dark depths of many spaces. Seeing perfectly in dim light, the bright lights is where this seems to differ. As their eyes are sensitive, they can be temporarily blinded until they adjust to the sun.

This leaves them with many disadvantages when it comes to social experiences, spending more time blinking than focusing on making a conversation.

Prehensile Tail

They can use their long tail as an additional limb, grabbing or latching onto things to keep oneself upright if close to falling. With its additional weight, they are slower than humans or elves when making their ways around.

Observer's Guidance

The curation of knowledge on places outside of the caverns is revered. The texts will guide a Wulvere to know about the grounds they come across.

You will know a little bit about the places you roam, even if miniscule in scale.

Clever Creature

Due to your society's curation of knowledge and texts, your intelligence is higher than average. Your intelligence score is increased by 2.
