Homebrew Whirosi Species Details

The Feywild is home to wonderful dreams and hideous nightmares.  The Whirosi are definitely of the former, as their spirits are of pure innocence and curiosity.  Their appearance is that of a small rodent, but their faces are wide with bright eyes and cute expressions.  Their hands are small and nimble, and their pudgy bodies are covered in fluffy fur.  They are intelligent and even have their own language, but they definitely give the benefit of the doubt to beings they shouldn’t.

They are born from the seeds of a Mother Tree.  Although they do not have normal bloodline families, the old adopt the young as if they were their own children.  They mature fast, and when they reach maturity, they start helping their tribe and their Mother Tree survive the harsh environment.  A rite of passage into adulthood is that they make a wooden mask for themselves, which helps give them an identity in the tribe.  When they reach exactly one hundred  years of age, they must be buried within dirt.  From their bodies grows a sapling for a new Mother Tree, which takes another one hundred years to mature before it can grow seeds.  On average, a Mother Tree can grow three to ten seeds per year, depending on how well taken care of it is that year.

Most denizens of the Feywilds protect the Whirosi.  Even the Unseelie Courts recognize the sovereignty of the Whirosi and leave them be.  More monstrous beings hunt the Whirosi for food, and some magic-wielders use them for potions and spells.  Only the cruelest of beings try to harvest a Mother Tree, but it does sometimes happen.  The Whirosi will gladly risk their lives to save their Mother Tree.

When a Whirosi is about to become a hundred years old, many members of the tribe go in search of a safe place to bury their elder.  This is how they carry on their lineage, so it is considered to be a very honorable quest.  Many die in the attempt, but so long as a place is found, the Whirosi celebrate the continuation of their life cycle.

Accustomed to life underground, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Fey Ancestry

You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can't put you to sleep.

Harder to Hit

Due to your size, you are naturally harder to target for attacks.  Your Armor Class increases by 1, but your Strength decreases by 3 (to a minimum of 1).

Hiding Expert

Due to your reduced size, you get Advantage on Stealth checks when you are hiding behind something.

Whirosi Legacy

Upon character creation, you must choose if you are of Meekah (air), Boosha (land), or Nanak (underground) Legacy.  Depending on which one you choose, your appearance will change and you’ll gain a different ability.
