Homebrew Couatlmeh {coo-wa-de-meh} (Couatl folk) Species Details

The couatl (a magical species of feathered flying serpents) have a long and sad history.  Their once proud kingdom lost in non-existence, most of their people consumed by evil, and the remnants of the rest scattered across the planes, the couatl have over time become near extinct.  In their later years, some of the coatl had fled to the realm of Chult and embraced the god known as Ubato.  He was the god of the jungle and living dinosaurs, and he could sense their good-natured spirits.  So, he welcomed them into his lands for them to thrive.

Unfortunately, Ubato’s reign was not forever.  He had fathered his own dark antithesis, whom he could not detect.  He was also constantly assaulted by Sseth, who’s worshipers were the Yuan-ti and already hated the Coatl.  Over generations of war, Ubato abandoned Chult and left his worshipers behind.  However, he recognized that the Coatl had always been devout to his ways, and he took them with him to his new home in Faerun.

Ubato knew that the Coatl would be found out by his enemies.  So to help them hide, he performed a trick on their kind.  Before, they were feathered serpents who could turn into a human if they wished.  Now, they were humans first who could transform into a feathered serpent for only a small time.  They were furious about this trick, but being isolated in a new world and without any other ally, they remained faithful to Ubato.

The descendants of this trick called themselves the Coatlmeh.  They usually are found in tropical climates, but they are not afraid of travel.  As a people, they remain loyal to Ubato, but his trick has pushed them to look for other patrons.  Perhaps if they continue to wander, they will one day find a home and a god to turn them back into the beings they once were.
