Homebrew Aranea Species Details
A long-forgotten race of giant spiders, long thought to have died, evolved similar traits, habits and personalities. Rarely, some Aranea run away, to see the world in it's entirety. Sadly, many face prejudice, as they still retain some of their spider-esque features.
Aranea Traits
Amazing weavers, runaway Aranea often survive in the most remote locations, using their webbing, produced from their mouth, to create rudimentary rope and wool-adjacent items, such as blankets, pillows, cushions, clothing, sleeping bags, etc.Webbing
Using their silk, which is roughly 1mm in diameter, they can create any manner of doodads and items, at the DM's discretion, including:
- A sleeping bag - Infinite uses, though will become dirty. Requires 300 cm3 of silk and up to 3 days of weaving
- A glider - 150m of use, until wood frame breaks, or 900m if iron / metal . Requires 130 cm3 of silk, 5 sticks / 1 metal frame and 1.5 days of weaving
- A bow / crossbow - Infinite uses, requires arrows / bolts respectively. Requires 30 cm3 silk, bow / crossbow frame and 1 hr of weaving
More may be added, though the DM specifies the webbing, time, and items required.
Aranea are capable of producing 130 cm3 of silk per day, before experiencing a "Dry weave" where they cannot produce anything but a bile-like substance.
Many Aranea also experience a shortage of webbing if they use any of their last 30 cm3 of their webbing, so that (If they use all 130 cm3 of webbing), they only get 100 cm3 the next day, and so on, till they get to 0 a day. The effect resets upon 1 day without using their emergency 30 cm3 of webbing.
Spider-Like
Due to their spider-derived form, Aranea have spider-like abilities, which are both a blessing and a curse, as they often have trouble integrating with other races, yet are able to survive in isolation.
- Prejudice - Many people dislike Aranea, as they still look like their less evolved cousins: -6 Charisma
- Arachnic acrobatics - Due to their many limbs, Aranea are extremely clumsy: -2 Dex
- Weaver's arms - Long hours of weaving different objects and items, Aranea have grown rather strong : +1 Strength
- Mandibles - Aranea mouths are designed to only speak Aranean, and it is extremely difficult for them to speak other languages, or for others to understand their garbled tongue, so many resort to small panels, which they create simple drawings or sentences.
Water-weak
Aranea were not able to evolve the ability to swim, and many give up and drown when they come into contact with deep water. Some, however, try and flail wildly about in water, which sometimes enables a short burst of speed in one direction - Requires a Strength saving throw with disadvantage.
Weak frame
Although strong, Aranea are often very sensitive to heavier armour, so many will opt for light armour, such as leather or chain.
They are also very un-coordinated, so larger weapons are unviable for use.
