Homebrew Argonian Species Details
Argonians, called Saxhleel in their own language, are lizard-like inhabitants of the Black Marsh. Insular and enigmatic, they seem to have little in common with most inhabitants of Tamriel. Those who do venture outside their swampy homeland are more likely to adopt local customs than to divulge much about their home's culture. What is commonly known is that all Argonians revere the Hist, a sapient species of tree endemic to the Marsh, which plays an important part in all aspects of indigenous culture.
Argonian Traits
Argonians are a product of their difficult and often deadly environment.Ability score changes
To aid them in an environment where everything wants to kill them, Argonians enjoy a +1 bonus to Dexterity and Constitution.
Proficiencies
All Argonians are well versed in Survival. Their wide array of roles allow them to also choose a Proficiency in Athletics, Insight or Stealth.
Amphibious
One of Argonian adaptations to their natural environment is the ability to breathe under water to an extent. An average Argonian can spend an hour submerged, whether resting or active, before resurfacing for fresh air.
Stay Moist
Despite their adaptability, Argonians are best suited to warm and humid environs. When forced to survive in dry climate, they have Disadvantage against its negative effects, such as dehydration or sunstroke.
Tastes Like Guar
Swamps are no place for weak stomachs and fragile livers. Aside from being able to stomach foods even Bosmer would find risky, Argonians take less damage from most poisons, venoms and corrosive substances found in nature.
Alien physiology
Whether due to their reptilian nature or some more obwcure reason, Argonians do not suffer from diseases which afflict most people, and make poor carriers of such diseases. While this allowed them to survive historical calamities such as the Knahaten Flu relatively unscathed, it also led to persecution and scapegoating born from those impacted by plagues.
Scaly Hide
Argonian preference for light and unrestrictive armor does not make one an easy kill; quite often their scales are enough to deflect a blade.
Native Language: Jel
Argonian native language, known as Jel, is strongly tied to not only their mentality, but also physiology. Due to its dependence on many nonverbal cues - gestures, subvocalizations, and even smells - it is impossible to learn for non-Argonians, earning them the collective term of ojel - "those who do not speak". Even a simplified, verbal form of Jel is hard to grasp for most men and mer, for example having no concept of past and future as commonly considered across Tamriel.
Learned Language
Due to Jel being so an insular, Argonians venturing outside the swamp are forced to learn another language. Ages of slavery under dark elf heel have left a mark - to this day, most tribes outside the deep mires know Dunmeris. While not nearly as ingrained, Cyrodiilic dialects are also known in Black Marsh, due to near-constant Nibenese presence in Blackwood.
