Homebrew Batfolk Species Details

Batfolk are a small, secluded species unknown by many, they inhabit most parts of the underdark, cave systems, and dark forests. They are quite hard to find however due to their tendancy to stay away from unknown noises, much as those made by adventures on quests. Unless you go looking for them, you won’t find any. Once every few moons however, there might be a few that decide to explore the world due to their adventurus nature.

Batfolk are a small race identified by their englarged ears, wings, and vast size diference over normal bats. they typically take on the colors of their environment which include natural earth tones, blacks, grays, and deep purples. they typicly stand at about 4-5’4 feet as grown adults (18) and live to around 150-200 years old.

Batfolk are usualy very timid and cautious, normaly prefering to stay in the saftey of their nautural habitats, they aren’t violent creatues by any means but will form giant deadly flocks if provoked. these creatues are not to be underestimated when they fight in large groups. batfolk speak in an unnamed language composed of ultrasonic clicks, shirps, and squeaks. this can make learning the language a difficult task for many. Batfolk culture is centered around an unknown god that they belive rules over the dark, the moon, and can control death. they belive in the natural cycles of death and life, and seek to preserve it in their travels.

Batfolk can leave their homes for many reasons, but the most common is an adventurous spirit, typicly they leave to see the world and explore, seeking the danger and exitement they missed in their former life.

(i found the images off of the thumbnail for a BetaEtaDelota video 😭. also most of the stuff in here isn’t very important and you can just skip it if you want 🥲. )

Batfolk Traits

Being part bat they have loads of things that will affect how they navigate the word

Echolocation

Because batfolk live in dark environments, almost never leaving the darkness of caves, forests or the underdark they have lost almost all use for their eyes. In order to maintain their sence of direction and the ability to see their environement, they have developed an advanced form of echolocation.

This trait grants batfolk Blindsight (50ft), however being that it relys on sound, it cannot see through walls, water, and it doesn’t work at all when either silenced, or deafened.

Evolving very good hearing is a great advantage for the most part, saddly this came with the consequence of becoming highly sensitve to loud sounds.

When taking any form of thunder damage, batfolk lose 10ft of their blindsight until they take a short rest or are healed in anyway. Batfolk also take much more damage from thunder damage making them very vunderable against certain enemies.

Sensitive eyes

Because Batfolk rely mostly on their sence of hearing, they have most of their need for eyes. only using them when looking for small details or to see their pray.

Batfolk’s vision is quite bad, and is even worse in very dark lighting, meaning they can only see 10ft while in a dark environement.

Typically, batfolk have a better time seeing in more dim lighting because it’s what their eyes are adapted for. however, their vision is still quite bad only being around 15ft in the best of conditions

When in bright light however their eyes can’t see almost anything mailt because their eyes take in too much light. this can cause a bit of discomfort which will cause them to lose consentration while in bright environements (they fail all concentration checks while in bright light). because of the discormfort, and the fact their eyes just see blobs of color for the most part, they only have vision upto 5ft in dark lighting.

(i think i nerfed them too much 💀)
