Homebrew Deep Sea Triton Species Details

Within my time living in the dark ravines of the ocean, I had seen many things. From anglerian raids being launched on nearby villages to colossal eels creating chaos in a kingdom within seconds of it's arrival, few stories have been able to top this. It was around 11 at night. At the time, I was sharing war stories with my companions across the table. We were in a jolly mood, slinging the underseas form of a beer around as if we were breathing on land. This thick, brown alcohol (commonly known as grickin) was being sloshed around the table, creating a mess in its disgusting path. The iron playing cards we had been using that night sat facing down on the table, scattered. Once again, I had bested my comrades in Croc's Eye.

That cheerfulness in the atmosphere was eventually broken. As they say, "A fool's joy must only last so long before reality is brought to attention." Right as I had begun to collect my rightfully earned money from the game, the table was broken in half. I looked down at the middle of the table to see an argonian laying on his back, bleeding out. Before I could look around to see what had chucked the unlucky fool, a cold, unforgiving voice came from my right. "Your military friend is a fool. If he steps into my mine once more, it will be his head next time." When I caught sight of this figure, I realized quickly that he could look me dead in the eyes. With dark blue scales covering his strong, well built body, greyish horns that curved like a minotaur, and fins that spanned aggressively on the side of his head, his spine, and the back of his arms, the stranger...no...the retired general showed no fear. Not knowing who I was talking to, I tried to stand up for my friend. I very quickly realized, it was one of the poorest mistakes I had ever made in my youth.

The deep sea tritons have learned to keep a neutrality to their state of mind. While gargantuan monsters roam the underdark of the ocean ravines, anglerians and argonians battle for land, and the illithids struggle to survive, the deep sea tritons have learned to pay no mind to the things around them. Only should you speak to them directly, would they ever care about the situations outside of their homestead.

The Tritons Long Lost Ancestors

Deep Sea Tritons and the normal tritons of today share some similar physical features due to being linked. Before the tritons moved their homes closer upwards in the ocean where the sunlight shined joyfully upon their kingdoms, they once lived in the dark ravines shared with some of the older races as well. To this day, deep sea tritons continue to exist however are rarely seen as most have no want to travel. Similar to tritons, deep sea tritons have blueish/purple scales however theirs tends to be a darker shade to help them blend into the darkness when needed. Between the sturdy scales of the tritons and their naturally thick skin to keep them warm in the cold caves and ravines that they inhabit, this leads to them to technically have developed a form of a hippo's thick skin. These tritons tend to have grey horns that curve like a minotaurs, but rather than curving up, they curve forward at a slant. These tritons have grey fins that travel down the spine, on the back of their arms, and on the side of their head as well as down their massive tails. Their tails tend to be the same length of their entire body, acting as a strong propeller in the water and a great weapon in combat. Lastly, these deep sea tritons have razor sharp teeth often used to tear meat into pieces as the deep sea tritons rarely cook the meat that they cook.

Ravine Life

Born into harsh conditions, the deep sea tritons have learned to adapt their architecture of their villages to combat the destruction of the colossal monsters that swim within the caves and ravines of the ocean. These tritons often have stone walls that surround any entrance into the village with iron, mythril, and adamantine beams supporting these walls to keep any unwanted intruders out. For a visitor to come in, they will often install a pulley system door that goes up and down similar to that of a guillotine. These towns are often built into pre-existing caves in ravines or near top areas of ravines. The actually buildings are built similarly to that of a miner town as their main source of trading resource and kingdom income comes from their insane mining systems that they have created.

While deep sea triton villages mainly tend to contain deep sea tritons (obviously), their villages aren't normally one to stop diversity from spreading into the town. Any burly built races are often sent to work in the mines or protect the village while the people relying more on dexterity are often sent to catch food, scavenge meat from already killed creatures, and create sustainable farmlands within the village as to feed the people.

Deep Sea Tritons are known for their brutish nature. Due to this, they often lean more towards martial classes. Barbarians, fighters, blood hunters, and monks are the most common for their people. Paladins, Artificiers, Clerics, and Rangers are a bit more on the uncommon side, but not rare. What is truly rare is to see a deep sea triton as a wizard, warlock, sorcerer, druid, bard, or rogue. That being said, it is always still a possibility to run into such. Why should a race hold you back on how you choose to fight after all?

Deep Sea Tritons are often rather neutral, especially the ones who have a chosen home. Should anyone disrupt their life in their home or cause destruction of any magnitude to their homestead, they will not hesitate to rain hell down upon your entire bloodline. They are naturally a pacifist race unless provoked or given reason to fight. Should you run into a traveling deep sea triton, they may just help you if they see that you are in distress or something of the sorts.

The deep sea tritons have a common love for the gladiatorial ring. Watching as fights unfold and techniques shine within the midst of combat, many of these tritons enjoy to engage in these events. Whether if it is simply watching from the stands or participating in the ring, watching as blood hits the ground only gets their blood pumping.

The cold does not harm you and neither will a trident...okay it will a bit, but not as much as the normal person. Due to the harsh living conditions of the cold, dark deep ravines that you inhabit, you have developed resistance to the cold and the impact of piercing damage due to your thicc skin and scales. Additionally, due to having such thick skin and scales, it becomes harder to break through your armor class. As a deep sea triton, your ac gets a +2

Monstrous Tail

With muscles trained over the years from swimming, the deep sea tritons can easily use their tail as a defensive and offensive weapon!

Monstrous Tail

All it takes is one strong swing of a deep sea tritons tail to knock the wind out of an opponent! This is often used to knock enemies onto their back and keep the enemy on the defensive. Monstrous Tail can be used as a bonus action as it is a racial trait natural to their culture and way of fighting. Monstrous Tail starts off doing a d10 of bludgeoning damage. The enemy must roll a strength check to hold their ground. Should they fail, the enemy is knocked prone.
