Homebrew Cartoffmurati Awakened Mimic Species Details

Rarely, a mimic is granted intelligence by authority or circumstance. An awakened mimic is often used by the denizens of dungeons held by wizards or other magically-attuned people as a means of more effectively safeguarding looted treasure, as they are more understanding of combat tactics and may be encouraged to use more than one given form.

An awakened mimic may be granted freedom, either by the destruction of the dungeon they inhabit or by the abandonment of their masters once the voraciousness of their appetite outpaces the influx of gold they bring in as living traps. Unaware of the world outside and finding themselves ill-suited to the brightness of the sky above, awakened mimics often find their ends at the hands of adventurers or city guards after indulging in their endless hunger.

In their true form, mimics appear as a gray blob, their features devoid of detail. It is rare to see a mimic in that form, for a typical mimic changes their shape when they first gain the ability to do so, and hold to that shape as long as possible. A casual shape—one created on the spur of the moment, with no depth or history—is called a mask. A mask can be used to express a mood or to serve a specific purpose and then might never be used again. However, many awakened mimics develop identities that have more depth, crafting whole personas complete with histories and beliefs. A mimic adventurer might have personas for many situations, including negotiation, investigation, and combat.

They may also prefer to utilize the form of objects, relying on other adventurers or merchants for travel and supply. While many use forms capable of being moved from one location to the next, others may instead choose to remain in one city or town as they find favorable. These mimics can hide for years, hiding in plain sight as statues in cities, stuck doors in dead-end alleys, or as loose furniture in abandoned buildings.
