Homebrew Barghest Species Details
A barghest is a lupine fiend that can take the shape of a wolf or goblin. In its natural form, it resembles a goblin-wolf hybrid with terrible jaws and sharp claws. Barghests come into the world to feed on blood and souls to grow stronger.
As whelps, barghests are nearly indistinguishable from wolves, except for their size and claws. As they grow larger and stronger, their skin darkens to bluish-red and eventually becomes blue altogether. A full-grown barghest is about 6 feet long and weighs 180 pounds. A barghest's eyes glow orange when the creature becomes excited.
Barghest Traits
Barghests inherit the following devilish traits:Ability Score Increase
One of your ability scores increases by 2, and another ability score increases by 1. Alternatively, you can increase three different ability scores by 1 point each.
Creature Type
You are a Fiend.
Size
You are medium.
Speed
Your base walking speed is 30 ft. Your base walking speed in wolf form is 40 ft.
Darkvision
You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Shapechanger
You may use an action to polymorph into a goblin, a wolf, or back into your true form.
While in goblin form, you cannot use your natural weapons or the feed action but you can wield weapons and wear armor. Your statistics, other than its size, are unchanged. Anything you are wearing transforms with you, but nothing you are carrying does. You revert to your true form if you die.
While in wolf form, you can't speak, your walking speed is 40 feet and you cannot use the claw or feed actions. Your statistics, other than your size and speed, are unchanged. Anything you are wearing transforms with you, but nothing you are carrying does. You revert to your true form if you die.
A creature must succeed a Wisdom (Insight) (DC equals 10 + your Charisma modifier + your proficiency bonus) to tell you apart from a regular goblin or wolf. Real wolves (or other canines, such as dogs) can immediately tell you are a barghest if you are in wolf form.
Natural Weapons
Your natural weapons allow you to perform the following actions:
Bite. Your bite relies on your Strength modifier and deals 1d8 piercing damage.
Claw. Your claw attacks rely on your Strength modifier and deal 1d6 slashing damage. They are also affected by the monk's Martial Arts class feature.
Feed. You target one creature with 0 hit points you can see within 5 feet of you. The target must make a Constitution saving throw (DC equals 10 + your Strength modifier). On failure, the target dies and cannot be resurrected until you are killed.
