Homebrew Calamity-Born Species Details
Calamity-Born are created by the Everything out of clay. When a new Calamity-Born is to be born, a festival is held. The festival is called Tanabata, also known as the Star Festival. The Creator joins the common folk in celebration before the sacred ritual: another Calamity-Born being created. To other Calamity-Born, this is the most sacred of events to their culture and religion. The birth of a new being means the death of one of their kin. Only one thousand Calamity-Born live at once, not including the half bloods. Before one dies, the Creator holds Tanabata, a public festival as the next of their kin is born to replace those who die. It is a festival to remind themselves of the importance of life and death. An equal balance of joy and grief, love and loss. To remind them of mortality and the fragility of life. During the festival, all Calamity-Born currently present in Eden are demanded to attend, so much so that they mentally and physically can not resist the summons. The night starts with a time of celebration. Everyone drinks merrily, eats in mirth, dances, sings, and tells stories. As the moon hits its peak at midnight, an eclipse shrouds the lands, the Creator arrives. Those who are Calamity-Born attend the ceremony, entering the temple. Outsiders are not permitted to even hold witness to the event. The festival continues until the ceremony is over. It is common practice for anyone who desires to write a wish for themselves, and a wish for the new kin on a piece of paper and tie it to the temple’s gates. At sunrise, the papers ignite, burning away, and the Creator grants a handful of the wishes.
When a Calamity-Born is born, the Everything grants them their name. They are made from a ball of clay, and given life. Their sclera will be either white or black, depending on the role they need to fill in their society. Though CB are genderless at birth, their biological anatomy and societal gender forms as they age and decide for themselves. They tend to be asexual and or aromantic, avoiding intimate relations. All Calamity-Borns consider one another as relatives, and it is considered the most taboo to have a romantic or sexual relationship with another Calamity-Born. While most do not engage in relationships, they find it acceptable to have relations with other species, although they frown upon breeding with them. Half-Bloods are considered abominations, seen as unpredictable and volatile since their abilities can come from either parent.
When it comes to Calamity-Born eyes, the color of their sclera plays an important role not only on their physical abilities, but their spirituality and societal standing as well. Those with white sclera are considered Wielders. Wielders are at the top of their society, able to communicate and connect with the Everything directly, phase more easily, and can summon the weapon of a Weapon’s soul. Those with black sclera are considered Weapons. They are more common, and are born with a spiritual weapon embedded in their soul. Only Wielders can pull this weapon and harness it, which is why the two need each other. Calamity-Born believe that the eyes hold their soul, and are extremely protective of them. It is customary to take a fallen Calamity-Born’s eyes before burial, and to even risk their lives to retrieve their fallen kin’s eyes. Their eyes are worth more than gold for their powerful utilities in alchemy and as a component in spells. They believe that other beings can also control them if their eye(s) are stolen.
The Corrupted were Calamity-Borns that were infected with the Mind Flayer parasite, and are considered the lowest of their kind. Evil and corrupted. It is unknown how the event happened, but the event known as “The Darkening” happened in their calendar’s second era, where a group of Calamity-Born children were gathered in mass and all turned Corrupted. The event was so strong, a blight infected the Calamity, taking eons to heal. The ruins of the temple where this event happened still exist, unhealed, and ignored like a forgotten grave.
