Homebrew Desert Harpies Species Details
The Desert Harpies are fairly different from what many would consider to be traditional harpies, that can be found throughout the rest of the world. Once, these harpies used to be like any other Tribe you might find throughout the world until they were blessed with the ability to cast magic much like a Sorcerer or Druid. Upon being given this blessing by what they could only believe was from one of the many gods/goddesses, the Tribal Leaders vowed to have their people protect magic from those who may seek to destroy or abuse it for great evils. Seeing as Desert Harpies are nomadic by nature, they use their travels to search for new magic that has yet to be discovered or that needs to be protected. Alongside this the Desert Harpies believe that magic is living and sentient in a way and that it chooses those who are deemed worthy or fated to have it.
Desert Harpies Traits
Desert Harpies are expert trackers, arcana worshippers, and spiritual creatures.Tracking Finesse
Those that are without a tribe are more often than not used by those who hunt magic, being forced into tracking various magical objects or artifacts. Other Desert Harpies that leave the safety of their tribe sometimes become bounty hunters or professional tracks, with sometimes very bountiful payments for their ability to trail mages and other spellcasters. Generally though it tends to come at a cost as they’ll eventually lose their powers by the very God who granted them such abilities and have to use more conventional methods to defend themselves.
Arcana Adept
The Desert Harpies follow Azuth, God of the Arcane. Due to the fact Azuth shares the same views on magic as the Desert Harpies, he rewarded the Desert Harpies’ devotion to the arcane. Thus granting them a small portion of his “power” so long as they continue to devote themselves to the arcane. The Desert Harpies themselves don't actually worship Azuth, but instead they worship the Weave, an interconnected tapestry of magic throughout the realm. This mutual respect for the preservation and advancement of the arcane is what has brought the Desert Harpies closer to Azuth. Albeit it is impossible to tell whether Azuth agrees with the rituals the various tribes conduct or not. Most Desert Harpies are usually Sorcerers, Clerics, Wizards, and Warlocks.
Tribes
Each of these Tribes follow a Shaman/Tribal Leader; these shamans dictate the actions that the tribe must task as well as the appropriate rituals that may need to be performed. Most Tribal Leaders/Shamans have it set that any who disagree with the shaman must either leave the clan or challenge them to a magical duel to take their place. These duels are not fights to the death, but instead grand showings of the harpies’ ability to manipulate the wave. They can easily be viewed as grand exhibitions of magic, with each showing their ability and precision in manipulating the Weave. Albeit some prefer to use destructive spells seeing as every school from conjuration to transmutation is permitted in such duels.
Spiritual Creatures
Being worshipers of the arcane, it may seem strange for them to pray. When they pray however, they are not praying to a divine entity, but instead to the Weave of the universe, hoping that they are brought closer to the threads of the Weave they are destined to meet. They often pray with travelers at the various Hands of Ether found throughout the land, teaching their ways to those who listen.
