Homebrew Axotl Species Details

The peaceful Axotl live their lives deep underwater in tightly knit communities which they view as one large family. While their kind can still be found in the depths to this day, there is the rare adventurous sort that make their way to the surface. Whatever reasons they may have for venturing to land, Axotl always find ways to adapt. These curious beings are light and agile, but where they shine most is in their wisdom from living between the land and sea. Axotl are often shy to new faces, but once they develop a bond with someone, it is near unbreakable. Their powerful sense of companionship has allowed them to accelerate their natural regeneration from tending to others, even those outside their species. Axotl are often healers found in small communities; However, their regenerative abilities also make them formidable fighters.

This race is a semi-WIP. Traits need to be seen in game to determine whether they need to be tweaked for balance. Please provide any feedback you may have after playing this race in any capacity to help determine whether it needs adjustment. Thank you!

Axotl Traits

As an Axotl, you have the following racial traits.

Ability Score Increase

Your Wisdom score increases by 2, and you can choose either your Constitution or Dexterity score to increases by 1.

Age

Axotl mature at a similar rate to humans, but their lifespan varies on their climate. In warm and wet climates they can live for a little over 100 years, whereas cold and dry climates cut their lifespan down to around 60.

Creature Type

You are a Humanoid.

Alignment

Axotl are naturally peaceful creatures that like to help others when their shy nature lets them. They tend toward good alignment.

Size

Axotl sizes vary on when they are introduced to land. Axotl that grew up in the sea will often reach similar heights to humans; however, those that left the waters early or were born on land will tend to only reach a height between 4 and 5 feet. Your size is Medium.

Speed

Your walking speed is 30 feet, and you have a swimming speed equal to your walking speed.

Limited Amphibiousness

You can breathe air and water, but need to be submerged at least once every 24 hours. You suffer 1 point of exhaustion each day you do not submerge. This exhaustion can only be healed from submerging in water, in which you heal 1 point of exhaustion for every 10 minutes spent submerged. Exhaustion points suffered from any other means cannot be healed using this trait.

Communal Regeneration

Axotl are natural healers given their regenerative traits. When you reach 3rd level, you can cast the Cure Wounds spell with this trait, and Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for it. Once you cast the spell with this trait, you can’t cast that spell with it again until you finish a long rest. You can also cast the spell using any spell slots you have of the appropriate level.

When you apply healing to a creature other than you, you can heal half the total hitpoints recovered up to a total of your character level + your proficiency bonus (minimum of 1). You may use this trait a number of times until this cap is reached, in which it cannot be used again until you finish a long rest.

Aquatic Roots

Axotl are regenerative creatures, but they have not yet adapted this ability to the world outside of the sea. While submerged in water, you gain access the following abilities with this trait:

  • As a bonus action, you may spend a hit die to regain hitpoints equal to the roll plus your constitution modifier.
  • When healing a creature, you may add hitpoints equal to your proficiency bonus on top of any healing applied to a creature that is submerged in water.

You have 3 uses of this trait, which you regain after finishing a long rest. You may also regain a use after spending 1 hour submerged in water.

Note: for the purposes of this trait, "submerged" is being in any water source that can at least fill a 5ft cube of space. However, the DM can overrule this and decide on what counts as submerged.
