Homebrew Darkling Species Details

Ancient legends speak of a seelie fey who betrayed the Summer Queen. In the Summer Queens’ wrath, she cursed every member of his house. The seelie fey’s true name has been stricken from history, but the stories call him Dubh Catha (“Dark Crow” in Common), and other Fey refer to the house’s descendants as dubh sith—“darklings.” Darklings dwell in secluded caverns and chambers beneath the towns of other species. From such enclaves, they quietly ply their trade as thieves and assassins.

Darkling Traits

Your darkling character has various features granted to them

Ability Score Increase

Your Dexterity score increases by 2, and your Wisdom score increases by 1.

Languages

You can speak, read, and write Common, Elvish, and Sylvan.

Age

Darklings mature at the same rate humans do and reach adulthood around the age of 20. They live much longer than humans, however, often exceeding 300 years.

Size

Darklings are about the same size as dwarves, ranging from 4 to 5 feet tall. Your size is Small.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30 feet.

Darkvision

Thanks to your fey nature, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 120 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Blindsight

Due to your fey nature, you can perceive anything within 30 feet of you without the use of your other senses.

Fey Nature

Your creature type is fey rather than humanoid. This means you are immune to effects that specifically target humanoids (like Charm Person) and effects that specifically target fey, target you.

Death Flash

When you die, nonmagical light flashes out from you in a 10-foot radius as your body and possessions, other than metal or magic objects, burn to ash. Any creature in that area and able to see the bright light must succeed on a DC 10 Constitution saving throw or be blinded until the end of the creature's next turn.

Light Sensitivity

While in bright light, you have disadvantage on attack rolls, as well as on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight.
