Homebrew Android Species Details
Androids are superficially identical to humans in many ways, and to the uninformed, it can be difficult to differentiate the two. In the right light, though, androids’ alien nature is revealed by the metallic sheen in their eyes and the biological, tattoo-like circuitry that riddles their skin. Their bodies are completely artificial though, made of materials that mimic the flexibility, shape, and density of human flesh and bone. Their organs mirror those of humans so well that only by examining the materials and makeup of these systems—which use sheeny oils and polymer alloys rather than blood and marrow—could one guess that their physiology is alien. Androids are roughly the same size as humans. On average, they are 6 feet tall and weigh 200 pounds.
Shamans speak of great forges where androids are “born” from metal wombs and are cut from electrified umbilical cords. Even androids can’t refute or verify such stories since most who emerge from ruins do so naked and without any memories beyond their initial egress into the wide, unfamiliar world. Their complex design is unlike that of any race known, leading many to suspect that they originated from a distant star system or even another galaxy. These forges have long stopped working, making the androids a limited race.
It is speculated these androids are indeed alien technology, made to guide humanity and perhaps prolong life for those without a body. Most probable is the theory of extraterrestrial implants where the aliens build and leave a self-sufficient forge or factory on a planet. These forges then pump out, manufacture and maintain androids. These particular androids are desired and mimicked by human technology. However human technology is vastly inferior to these as they have no way to wire a soul like these androids were built to house. Ever since their discovery, humans have often sought after these rare models to help ensure their life after death in an ageless body. However, with so many imitations produced, people are hardpressed to differentiate androids now, which lets androids have some peace in their lives.
Android Traits
As an android, you gain the following traits:Age
An android ages as a normal human, though they start at age 0-years-old. Due to their technological nature, it is not known when an android dies of old age. They can be killed by any normal means that would fell a typical mortal.
Alignment
As androids have no set characteristics, they tend to adapt to their surroundings. And as such, their behavior is often based on the culture around them.
Size
Androids are generally the size and shape of humans, standing between 4 to 7 feet tall. Rarely is a model that is smaller or taller than these heights. Your size is Medium.
Speed
Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Darkvision
You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Creature Type
You are a living construct. Even though you were constructed, you are a living creature. You are immune to diseases. You do not need to eat or breathe in order to survive by normal means, but you must consume food and/or drink to convert the matter into energy internally. Instead of sleeping, you enter an inactive "sleeping" state. The time required for you to receive the benefits of a short rest is 2 hours, while a long rest is 4 hours. You do not dream in this state; you are fully aware of your surroundings and notice approaching enemies and other events as normal.
Nanite Surge
Androids possess nanites within their body that can be used to repair any damage they sustain and shift the physiology of their body. As a bonus action, you may set these nanites to work and regain 1d6 + your proficiency bonus in hit points. The hit points increases to 2d6 at 6th level, 3d6 at 11th level, and 4d6 at 16th level. After you use your nanite surge, you can’t use it again until you complete a long rest.
Wired
As an android, you have advantage on saving throws against being poisoned and have resistance to poison damage. However, you have disadvantage in saving throws against acid and lightning damage.
Mechanical Mind
You notice patterns and shapes very easily. You are proficient in the Investigation skill.
Data Assimilation
Androids true origins and purpose of creation, are, for the most part, unknown to the world. It is theorized by many that they were created by extraterrestrial beings as a means for guiding and cultivating progress in early races of the planet. Helping them to not only adapt to and navigate the varying environments and climates of the world, but also each other. To help with this process, each android was created with the ability to assimilate data into their bodies. Equipped with four disks, containing data of four different settings and programs, stored within a small compartment within the androids left arm, these can be inserted into a slot within the base of the androids neck. Once a disk is inserted the android enters into an “inactive” sleeping state the length of a long rest, while the nanites within their body integrate the newly acquired data, erasing any obsolete or conflicting data, and reconfiguring the body in response. Any interruption to this process not only leaves them susceptible to damage, but also risks the disk breaking, something that can also occur when an android receives a critical hit, lightning and/or acid attack that leaves them in the dying state. When a disk is broken while inside of the android, the android must immediately eject the broken pieces, leaving them in a corruptive state.
The Angeloid Disk
A white disk, with golden label region
Atmospheric Navigation and Tracking. In order to adequately and easily traverse the sky and the constructs that float within it, the disk codes for the creation of slits and vents throughout the body. These vents absorb surrounding air and gasses into the body, condensing and then releasing them to allow for levitation and propulsion. This allows for a flying speed of 40 ft. when not wearing medium or heavy armor. When donning either of those armor classes, the flight speed is 20 feet. You also gain advantage on perception checks that rely on sight.
Aerial Agility. You are naturally nimble in the air. You have advantage on Dexterity saving throws made to avoid falling when flying.
Languages of Those Above. You gain fluency in Auran.
The Aquanoid Disk
A dark blue disk, with a light blue labeling region
Way of the Water. Most life originates from and exists within the vast seas of the world. In order to get to this life and be able to adequately serve it as androids were meant, they must be able to traverse the seas. In the same way the Angeloid Disk codes for the creation of slits and vents, the Aquanoid Disk does the same with slight modifications. The vents take in surrounding water, pressurize it, and then release it allowing for propulsion through the water. This allows for a swimming speed of 40 ft.
Alkaline Essence. To ease travel through water, the nanites secrete a mucus like liquid that covers the android. This mucus-like covering breaks down and neutralizes acids, granting resistance to acid damage. This covering also grants fire resistance but lightning vulnerability. Though any checks involving grappling, by and against you, are at a disadvantage along with acrobatics checks.
Seaspeak. You gain fluency in Aquan.
The Firmoid Disk
A green and brown disk, with a reddish yellow labeling region
Subterranean Knowledge. Most of an android's life is spent leading creatures over vast expanses and land and through various types of ecosystems. You have advantage on checks to identify features of terrain and the life that lives there, and to recall information about the plane of the planet. As well as information about gems, rocks, and metals
From the Time of Early Man. Due to having lived life in caves, with danger around the corner, you have developed a way to ensure the safety of yourself and those and who follow you. You are granted a tremorsense of 20ft
Mantle Armor. Mimicking the stone found in the mantle, the nanites in your body externalize, forming a hard covering of light armor around your body. This increases your AC by 1, and grants resistance to fire and lightning damage.
The Polaroid Disk
A light blue reflective disk, with a black label region
Steam Engine. Ingesting lots of water, along with periodically ingesting an adequate fuel source, with the changes made by the nanites, boiling water can be produced. This boiling water can be contained inside your body, causing you to not only produce steam, but produce heat within a five foot radius. This grants a resistance to cold damage, and allows for ice and snow to be melted by touch. As a reaction you can also perform a boiling water attack that does 1d6 fire damage, that increases by 1d6 when you reach 5th level (2d6), 11th level (3d6), and 17th level (4d6)
Ice Pick. Ice can be a very tricky and difficult terrain to traverse, but that doesnt stop the pioneers. The nanites within you allow you to reconfigure your hands into either sharp nails or into long slender appendages hard enough to pierce and dig into ice. These long slender appendages grant advantage on checks that involve climbing, specifically ice, and can be used as unarmed weapons, the sharpened nails doing 2d4+2 slashing damage, and the appendages doing 2d8 piercing damage.
Clearing Corruption
Corruption, if left to propagate, can cause a culminating series of symptoms leading up to permanent “death”. Starting with an immediate level of exhaustion, another level is added for every 4 hours that “sleep” isn't occurring. During the time of corruption, any event that causes great stress—including entering combat, taking damage, experiencing fear, or having a nightmare—forces the android to make a DC 13 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, they take 4 (1d8) lightning damage as their nanites short circuit. To purge this corruption, an android must go into the inactive state and “sleep” for 8 hours, during which they must remain undisturbed. Repairing the disk that caused this requires 2 hours of concentrated mending.
