Homebrew Blood Starved Species Details
Whether you consider Vampires fact or fiction matters very little when your blood is being drained from your veins. ~ Some old vampire
Vampires come in all shapes and sizes; whether its the all powerful True Bloods or the cursed Dhampirs. Regardless of the what and how, one thing remains common between them all; hunger. Under the usual circumstances starvation will cause a vampire to wither away, eventually turning to dust, but in some rare cases, a vampire retains the will to carry on. Wandering their tombs, castles or dungeons as nothing but mummified husks, hoping to find even a drop of nutrients. It is for this reason that many of the world do not even know of the blood starved and even to the vampires themselves it is but a bedtime story told to them as young bats. Unfortunately for the world, this myth is far more real than the natural laws would like.
Blood Starved Nutrients
As a blood starved you hunger for what you consumed prior to your evolution. Choose from or roll a d6 on the list below.
1. Fresh Blood
2. Dreams
3. Dying breath
4. Flesh or raw meat no older than a day.
5. Souls
6. Psychic energy
Blood Starved Seal
Blood starved evolved due to lack of feeding, strong will and isolation. To decide your origin, choose from or roll on the table below.
1. An ancient vampire hunter sealed you away in a crypt for eons, hoping starvation would do what he could not. They were wrong. (Revenge kept you going.)
2. When you turned, those close to you decided to shelter you while they searched for a cure. You were forgotten long before the cure was found. (Hope kept you going.)
3. You betrayed your vampire nest, and as punishment were banished to the ethereal plane where even though there was no food, you were unable to die. (Magic kept you going.)
4. You fell in love, but it was not meant to be. When the torches came, your loved one locked you away. They promised to come back. (Love kept you going.)
5. You were working on a magic experiment that was said to grant immortality. You are unsure if the experiment failed or succeeded but you were keen to find out. (Distractions kept you going.)
6. You were arrested and hung for your crimes. Fortunately, none knew of your Vampiric ability to cheat death. Unfortunately, they buried you under layers of bedrock. (Hunger kept you going.)
Blood Starved Traits
Your Vampiric blood as well as your evolved hunger has granted you the following features.Creature Type
You are Humanoid. When you are under the effects of Blood Starved your type changes to Undead.
Ability Score Increase
Increase one ability score by 2 and increase a different one by 1, or increase three different ability scores by 1. If you are replacing your race with this lineage, replace any Ability Score Increase you previously had with this.
Languages
You can read, write and speak common and one rare language you would know.
Size
You are Medium or Small. You choose the size when you gain this lineage.
Ancestral Legacy (Variant)
Your Vampiric blood and evolved hunger has shifted your being from that of your original race, though some traces still remain. You can choose a racial trait from your original race prior to choosing this lineage. If no prior lineage exists or you chose this race at character creation, you may select an appropriate feat instead.
Speed
You have a base walking speed of 35 feet.
- Starting at 3rd level you gain a climbing speed equal to your walking speed.
Sunlight Sensitivity
While in sunlight, the Blood Starved has disadvantage on attack rolls, as well as on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight.
Super nocturnal stalker
At night time, you are a nocturnal hunter that excels at ambush tactics. Your steps are silent and any wisdom (perception) checks made to hear you is made at disadvantage.
Additionally you learn the Misty Step spell and can cast it once per day without expending a spell slot regardless of the time of day. You can only cast the spell in this way once per long rest, regaining the ability to do so after a long rest. You may also cast the spell using any available spell slots.
Darkvision
You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You discern colors in that darkness as shades of gray.
Deathless Nature
You have escaped death, a fact represented by the following benefits:
- You do not age naturally, though you are still affected by magical aging.
- You have advantage on saving throws against disease and being poisoned, and you have resistance to poison damage.
- You don’t need to sleep, and magic can’t put you to sleep. You can finish a long rest in 4 hours if you spend those hours in an inactive, motionless state, during which you retain consciousness.
Evolved hunger
Your fanged bite is a natural weapon, which counts as a unarmed attack with which you are proficient. You add your Constitution or Dexterity modifier, instead of your Strength modifier, to the attack and damage rolls when you attack with this bite. It deals 1d6 necrotic damage on a hit. While you are missing half or more of your hit points, you have advantage on attack rolls you make with this bite. Succeeding on a hit with this attack is considered feeding for the sake of the Blood Starved effect and heals you for double your proficiency bonus.
Blood Starved Effect
You do not need to breath, drink or eat to stay alive, however you must feed on your chosen nutrients at least once a week or suffer 1 level of the Blood Starved effect. If you already have a level then your level instead increases by the amount specified to a maximum of 5.
For every level of Blood Starved you lose 1d4 character levels and one of your limbs wither and take on a mummified form. If all of your limbs are withered, you take on the physical form of a mummified husk and your creature type changes to Undead. Additionally, when completely withered, all creatures with the Lawful Good alignment will become hostile towards you.
If your level is reduced to below level 1, your level instead remains at 1 and you become completely withered, regardless of how many limbs you still have remaining.
Feeding resets your level and physical form as well as reduces the level of Blood Starved to 0.
