Homebrew Wendigo Species Details
A Wendigo can be created in several ways, and manifests in different forms, but specifics are scarce, leaving most of the process up to the imagination. Reportedly, a human can become one after being stranded in the cold with nothing but dead bodies to eat for an extended period of time. Others claim that Wendigos are men possessed by vengeful spirits, hungry for flesh and blood. Whatever the cause, it happens very rarely, and when it does, there are almost never any survivors. Talk with your DM to decide how a Wendigo is created in his world.
Wendigo Traits
Wendigos come in two types; The Cryptid, a skull-headed spook, and The Curse, an emaciated wraith.Cannibalism
Being a creature of pure voracity, you are compelled to consume flesh of recently deceased creatures. After a fight in which at least one edible (DM's discretion) creature died and left behind its carcass, you must spend ten minutes feasting upon the creature. Optionally, you may make a wisdom saving throw to avoid this (the DC is 10 plus half your level, rounded down).
Fearful Presence
As a bonus action, you may attempt to break the wills of any/all creatures you can see. Each creature must make a wisdom saving saving throw or become [Frightened] of you for one minute. You may use this feature a number of times equal to one plus your charisma modifier per long rest. At level fifteen, this becomes an at-will ability.
Preternatural Vision
Your senses are boosted to a superhuman level; you have Blindsight if any of your senses of sight, smell, or hearing are unimpeded.
Twisted Form
Because of your horrific, revolting nature, you have disadvantage on all [Persuasion] checks, -2 to charisma, and advantage on [Intimidation] checks.
Freakish Nature
By becoming a Wendigo, you gained enhanced strength and dexterity (+1 each), but lost considerable vitality (-3 constitution).
Wendigo (The Cryptid)
The Cryptid, its head replaced with a deer or elk's skull, lurks in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to strike, then consume their prey.
Relentless Pursuit
At the start of each of your turns, you may designate a single hostile creature you can see or hear as your prey. Until that creature is dead, teleports, or you change your target, you always know its exact location. In addition, if you are within 100' of it, you may use your action to teleport to a location within 30' of it that it cannot see. Teleporting in this way produces the sound of a twig snapping upon your arrival. You may use this feature a number of times equal to twice your dexterity modifier.
Spirited
Things change when a Wendigo is near; the woods darken, flames flicker, and chilling winds rustle through the trees. You gain access to the cantrips Thaumaturgy and Gust, allowing you to replicate these effects.
Skeletal Claws
In becoming a Cryptid Wendigo, your hands become long, thin claws. Your unarmed strike deals 2d4 slashing damage plus your strength modifier. At level 10, the damage die becomes a d6.
Wendigo (The Curse)
The Curse is an emaciated, freakish being, its lips bitten off in its insatiable hunger, limbs long and taught.
Voracious Speed
There are few sights so terrifying as that of a Cursed Wendigo sprinting full-force on all fours through a dark, snow-covered forest. You have a base movement speed of 55', allowing you to catch all but the fastest of prey.
Withered Form
Cursed Wendigos are forever hungry, their body withered and fragile. Unfortunately for its victims, its speed and agility provide little opportunity to take advantage of this. You have an additional +2 to dexterity, and -2 to constitution.
Tundral Appetite
Your bite deals 1d6 plus your strength modifier [cold] damage. Any creature hit by this attack must make a constitution saving throw or be reduced to half movement speed for one minute. The target may repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its subsequent turns. At level 10, the damage die for this attack becomes a d8.
