Homebrew Astran Species Details

Legends tell of stars with personalities, describing the celestial points of light as people with beliefs, ideas, and identities. And to an Astran, that is exactly what they are.

Every once in a blue moon, the spiritual essence that suffuses the void beyond the world brushes against the upper atmosphere, blending with the ozone and creating a thin, ephemeral rift in the veil. Through this rift, Astrans sometimes fall: wandering spirits that live among the great spheres of plasma, observing and loving the universe. When an Astran enters the atmosphere for the first time, a body is created to suit the Astran it belongs to. The appearance of an Astran may vary greatly, but all Astrans share glowing white skin that reflects the piercing light they lived as previously and the void shape that calls back to the space they traveled. An Astran's form, otherwise, is a perfect representation of the creature's innermost thoughts, desires, and emotions, and may change over time as the Astran interacts with the world.

Astrans do not remain in the world for very long; they are spiritually bound to the atmospheric rift that formed them. As this rift begins to close, the Astran's physical form begins to fade away, until nothing remains but its eternal soul, which returns to the void and assumes its rightful place among the stars. A rift may be open for only a few days, or it could remain open for decades, allowing some Astrans that fall through it to experience the world more thoroughly than others.

Astrans tend to be emotionally detached from the goings on in the material world; since they are eternal souls who are acclimated to wandering the void and exploring ancient secrets of the universe forever, they see most worldly lives as short and ephemeral, but beautiful. Like elves, they are fascinated by the passion that marks the shorter-lived races; though they themselves never truly die, each one longs to fathom the love younger beings show for each other and for life itself, and so they try to approach their own brief window into material reality with that same passion.

Though an Astran will always try to make the most of its short visit to the physical world, those who remain longest often become homesick, spending nights beneath the great dome of heaven and gazing at the rising sun as though it is a beating, living heart. They yearn to return to the void that spawned them, and they can feel their home calling them more and more strongly as their rift begins to close. When they depart at last, they bid a fond farewell to the world that welcomed them so warmly, if only for a short time, and then they return to the depths of interstellar space, never to be seen again.
