Homebrew Axolotl Species Details

Axolotls were created 40 years ago by the CPA, Cave Preserving Agency, to protect caves from miners. Though they had a reason to protect these caves, some were filled with life and others were still in development; they believed it would be wrong for us to stop the wonderful process of a growing cave and destroy a thriving ecosystem. Though Axolotls have been on Earth for 10,000 years this recent evolution of the species is still classified as an Axolotl due to the fact that they are only an evolution of the original axolotl.

Cave Protectors

Axolotls were made to protect caves and they do just that. Any caves that are lush, filled with life, or in development are protected by Axolotls in order to keep miners away, protecting the cave and its life from any harm. Axolotls will attack if someone causes harm to the cave or its ecosystem, for they are determined to keep the cave safe. Despite their cute and cuddly look these creatures and fairly strong and should not be messed with as they are armed with claws, high agility, and powerful tails. 

Personality

Axolotls are very friendly and playful creatures. Typically docile these beings are very easy to get along with and will never have one bored! Despite showing symptoms of ADHD Axolotls do not have ADHD as these qualities are a part of their natural personalities. Axolotls can charm those around them with their playful personalities and sweet nature. They love to fish and plant, usually taking the farmer's way of life and having no sense of currency. Axolotl are generous and are willing to help those in need for no price at all but they will still ask for favors of one every now and then.

Axolotls can be scared easily and if they are frightened they will flee, though if you damage a cave and do not frighten the nearby Axolotls away they will attack without fear and cannot be frightened once in combat. 

Diet

Axolotls were originally carnivorous but this evolved form is able to eat some specific plants, but even with this factor Axolotls are still mainly carnivorous. Their diet consists of fish, worms, insects, and berries.

Appearance

Axolotl are very similar to their original forms. Axolotls have their normal external feathery gills on the sides of their heads, allowing them the ability to breathe underwater. These external gills are more efficient than their normal internal gills, making them a vital part of their bodies. Axolotl have small beady eyes that have a slime over them to protect them from debris and dirt, though despite this their eyesight is not very good as they can only make out motion. They keep their dorsal fins from when they were children for the rest of their lives, making them look more kid-like but also giving them an advantage to their swimming abilities.

Axolotl can come in different forms but these different forms do not affect the Axolotl in any way. These forms are Leucistic, Piebald, Golden Albino, Melanoid, Wild, Chimera, Enigma, Firefly, Mosaic, Copper, and Green Fluorescent.

Dance Ritual

When reaching maturity instead of celebrating in a birthday manner like most do Axolotls perform a dancing ritual to celebrate the maturity of another Axolotl. These rituals are mainly filled with dancing but can also consist of food and speeches.

Axolotl Traits

As an Axolotl you have been given these traits to help protect the caves.

Regeneration

You have the ability to regenerate different body parts. Regenerable body parts include your arms, claws, legs, tail, jaw, and brain. You can use this as an action at any time but after use, you will need to take a long rest in order to be able to use it again.

Age

Unlike the normal Axolotl; these beings can live up to twice the age limit, reaching maturity at 6 years old.

Size

Axolotls are placed in the small height range due to their maximum height being 3'5.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 22 feet, making land travel difficult for you as it is not your main way of traveling.

Strengths and Defenses

You are equipped the claws, high agility, and a powerful tail. Your claws give a strength bonus of 1 and you can attack with them using a Scratch attack. Your powerful tail gives you the ability to use the Coil action and the Tail Attack action; your tail is likely the most powerful part of your body. Your high agility gives you a Dexterity bonus of 3 and an advantage in Athletics.

Languages

You can speak Common and one extra language of your choice.

Water Breathing

Because of your external gills, you have the ability to breathe under the water.

Easily Frightened

When an enemy scares you in any way you will flee from them and become frightened for an hour.

Swimming Speed

Your base swimming speed is 61 feet.
