Homebrew Badgerid Species Details

Badgerids are ferocious beyond the constraints of their small bodies, picking fights with whoever looks at them the wrong way. These ferocious creatures are often raised in plains or desserts, though badgerids often travel around to various terrains. They are solitary creatures that favor nomadic lifestyles, constantly foraging or hunting. Badgerids are commonly seen in cities as merchants, craftsmen, or most commonly, bounty hunters.

Badgerids are easily identified by their small stature, standing at 3-4ft, and black fur with a notorious grey oval starting from their foreheads to their mid-back. These creatures are often seen picking fights with those twice their size, such as Leonin or Yuan-ti. They are not afraid to start a fight, and are typically seen donning a variety of scars from their previous brawls. Their appearance may be seen as non-threatening to those who haven’t encountered the race before, but their sharp claws and tough skin are part of what makes this race so resilient.

Badgerid Traits

In order to pick so many fights, badgerids have to be resilient and determined. Their ferocious disposition and hearty nature give badgerids the edge they need in a tough fight.

Ability Score Increase

Your Constitution score increases by 2, and you can increase any other stat score by 1.

Age

The Badgerid typically matures at age 10 and can live up to the age of 80. Despite this, not many live to reach this age due to their short-fuse temperament, picking fights with anyone or anything. Due to this, the leading cause of death tends to be biting off more than they can chew in fights.

Size

Badgerids are easily identified for their small structure, standing at 3-4ft, and the black fur with the notorious grey oval starting from their foreheads to their mid-back. They often have claw scars from picking fights with other of their species or who knows what.

Speed

Your base walking speed is 30ft and you have climbing speed 30ft.

Darkvision

As a nocturnal creature, you are accustomed to grasslands and nights under the stary sky, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Temperament

Your race is notorious for its strength and ferocity. Known to savagely attack the offender when there's no escape and refusing to back down even if there is. You gain proficiency in intimidation.

Spitting Resilience

Badgerids are known for their tough skin and unreasonable resilience. This race picks so many fights, they have developed skin so thick, that even Yuan-ti venom has a lessened effect on them. You have resistance and advantage on saving throws against poison damage.

Steel Claws

Many badgerids use their claws to help them climb to get higher vantage points, helping them see over visual obstacles. There have been a few cases of especially grudging badgerids climbing up to high places to ambush whatever creature pissed them off from above. You have claws that you can use to make slashing attacks at your foes. When you hit with them, your claw deals 1d6 + your Strength modifier slashing damage.

Loose Skin

After picking so many fights, one of the natural defenses this race has developed is looser skin. This allows them to shrug off blows like shaking off water. When you take damage, you can use your reaction to roll a d8. Add your Constitution modifier to the number rolled and reduce the damage by that total (minimum of 1). You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus and regain all uses of the feature after completing a long rest.

Languages

You speak, read, and write Common and Badgerite. Badgerite was developed by large groups of Badgerids in mercenary guilds. Badgerite is a language that varies from loud grating noises to a high pitch bark, making it a language difficult for other species to speak and learn.
