Homebrew Coralin Species Details
Coral is a marine invertebrate that is in the phylum Cnidaria, the same as jellyfish. They are usually formed from compact colonies of polyp, of which there are 6000 species around the world. These colonies will usually come together to form what are called Coral Reefs, which is formed from the rock-like skeletons of past coral polyps over thousands of years and form a habitat for over 1 million species worldwide with new ones being discovered all the time. This makes coral a keystone species due to its ability to prop up an ecosystem. They also aid in protecting shorelines from harsher ocean waves by breaking them before they reach the shore. Corals live in water that is warm and shallow, often in tropical areas. They have arm like tentacles that are used to grab food and sting attackers. Unfortunately, there are several dangers to coral. These include things such as overfishing, coral mining, rising ocean temperatures and sea levels, the acidification of the ocean, runoff from agriculture and urban environments, pollution, and a few other issues. This has caused the death of 10% of the world's coral, with roughly 60% still at risk. Coral reefs area often protected by various organizations around the world but are still in danger unless the environment improves.
Coralin Traits
Traits based on the facts and traits of real coralAbility Score improvements: +2 Constitution, +1 Wisdom
These were chosen because Coral reefs are made of the stony skeletons of former corals and can exist for a very long time, with wisdom is usually attributed to experience and age.
Weather the Storm
Coral reefs are known to be a major factor in protecting shorelines from tropical storms and waves. You have a natural armor of 13+ your Dex modifier. Additionally, Coralin are able to sacrifice their movement as a bonus action to become immune to forced movement and Gain +1 AC. This effect lasts until the start of your next turn.
Symbiotic Energy
One method by which corals gain food is through a symbiotic relationship with algae within their cells to provide them energy in exchange for protection. I have translated this as Coralin not needing to eat as long as they are exposed to sunlight for one hour or more.
